Window Seals Question

Post by JustinMinor1000 »

Mirium has Some interesting problems, One of them is that she is not watertight by any stretch of the imagination, the other is that the paintwork on the roof is TERRIBLE. The whole body has been bodged very badly in the past great thick loads of paint chucked on to an unprepared surface. The rest of her body is "Passable" but the roof is pealing very bady. The problem is that such large chunks of paint are coming off that either we would have to fill the holes they are creating with pug :-? or strip the roof to bare metal and start again :o

As we are going to replace all the window seals anyway I thought the easiest way to do this would be to remove the windows and then strip the roof from the bonnet hinges to the line below the rear window using the rain gutter as a dividing line. If I strip this with Nitromors :o and then prepare it with red oxide paint I could then give it to someone else to spray.

I have two questions ... firstly does anyone have any general advice on stripping the roof and secondly because the seal on the windows is so critical it this something best left to one of the Morris minor centres or is it possible to do myself ?

I assume you mean the rubber window seals around the front and rear screens? Replacing these at the same time as re-painting the roof would make sense. beware however :o  of the potential cost and future problems associated with a leaking rear screen rubber (see the top tips section).

I've had my rubbers replaced professionally (4 years ago). The cost was £45 each. It's certainly possible to do it yourself, although a helper, (black) silicon gun and the special tool for the windscreen chrome strip are necessary.

Your idea to re-spray the area between the rain gutters makes sense. You would need to initially contact the re-spraying company to see what work they would be happy for you to do - they might want to use etching primer to ensure the paint has a firm grip on the metal. In which case they might agree for you to strip the paint yourself and then deliver the car to them.
