Engine starts to cut out at over 50mph

Post by dnac »

Hi, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

I replaced the head gasket on my moggy tonight, and after putting it all back together and giving in a quick test run up the road, it seems to start to cut out when it gets over 50, then as you slow it down, and get to around 30 it seems to stop cutting out and behaves itself again.

I cannot work out if its electrical or fuel, can anyone give me an idea on where to look.

Thanks

First check would be points gap - could also be condenser (swap it for a new one) or coil packing up. But why were you changing the head gasket ? Check the carb piston can rise easily and fall with a clunk.

Hi there if you have had the head off it is most likly to be the fuel system. Up ending the carb with the enevitable muck in the bottom and loosing the oil from the dash pot is a good starting point for checks. Also how old is the fuel pipe mine had to be changed when the lining cracked up also whilst on the fuel system check the filter on the bottom of the pump. Hope this helps.

As already sugested, replace condenser and check carb innards move freely. Also check that fuel cap is not air tight - it has to be sealed to stop fuel coming out, but needs a small air vent to prevent vaccum forming in tank which leads to fuel starvation.
