Washer and indicator set up

Help I've just had a peep under Sophie's bonnet and found this strange (to me anyway) indicator relay set up.

Why is there a bulb attached and what does it do? She is a 1961 with indicators and trafficators.



and what about this washer bottle and electric pump was this original or a later add on?

None of the electrics work - to be honest I haven't tried to make them work yet. Actually the starter works and the interior light. As soon as the traveller goes on its travels and I have some room I'll get the boxes out of the interior and see what I have. Then I'll get some oil into the pump and see about making her start.

You'd better find the bloke who wired mine using only black wires - he might understand it...

no reason as far as i can see for the bulb at any rate.

the washer bottle, well not sure on cars.
i know gpo vans and post office vans and mod travellers had this electric washer bottle, although it was plastic and not glass.

The washer bottle is a nice mod. Cannot understand the bulb though, is it
just hanging there with two wires soldered to its contacts?? Does one of the wires come from 'P' contact on the flasher unit and the other from chassis?

Thats exactly right Wilie! but there is a purpose made clip to hold the bulb that looks "original" I suspect its something to do with the traficator/indicator hybrid setup. Does you tourer have traficators? Are the orange rear indicators the original set up?

If you have flashing trafficators, there's only one bulb per side. This isn't sufficient load for the flasher unit to work correctly, so this bulb would be added to correct the load on the lasher unit to give the correct flashing rate......

I think the word "bodge" was used .....

Sounds good to me too provided that you have flashers AND semaphores
on the car with the flashers only at the front or rear? The usual flasher unit needs at least 42W load on it in order to actually 'flash' i.e. 21W bulbs at front
and rear.
