progress report - managed to turn the car around so that i could work inside the garage and strip it all down without having to worry about an immobile car sticking out of the garage!

only one problem tho - it wasn't wide enough to draw the halfshafts right out before they hit the wall!

hey ho at least all the bolts and nuts came out really easily as it was off with entire back axle then and low and behold a snapped and rather mangled half shaft.

the entire axle is now in my shed awaiting a pair of secondhand half shafts that will be machined to fit.

i'll replace all the seals and gaskets and give it all a clean and paint just for good measure!

Well done - but the risk highlighted above - about putting shafts in the wrong side compared to where they had their previous life is very real. If possible - try to judge the marks on the splines - and put them back as they were run before.
All this has got me worried about MY half-shafts !! So I think I had better swap them over for the spares I have had in stock for 6 years now. At least I know they came from a low mileage 'little old lady' car.
