Front Wings

Could you help please!
I am wondering what, if anything goes between the front wings and the body of the car, when i took mine off it looked like polyfiller!

Also both my headlamp buckets are knackered and i am going to get plastic ones, my question is the ring on the back of the wing where the bucket mounts (with the 4 captive nuts) is this supposed to be part of the wing or has mine just got itself stuck?
Just wondered as all the captive nuts are broken and have to be removed.

Lastly (for now as i am sure loads more questions will need answered) where do you order your parts and paint from? as the best price seems to be advertised including VAT and then you go online and the price seems to be completly different!

ESM or Bull Motif for parts (both have web sites). ESM prices include VAT.

The ring with the captive nuts is part of the wing and not supposed to come off. You could drill out the captive nuts and weld in new nuts for the screws to hold the light bowl on. I have to confess, to get the car back on the road, I let some metric countersunk screws creep in here (hangs head in shame!). Best to keep the car on its original AF/Whitworth if you can. In my case I ran a metric tap down the remains of the captive nuts. It worked but I don't like having metric fixings.

As for what to go between wing and car- mastic, dum dum putty, seam sealer (brushable as from Halfrauds) or if you re-apply every year Waxoyl or dinitrol will prevent rust.

If your car has filler on the inner wing- some further welded repairs may be required. Dig into the filler and see what it is.

Paint- ESM do cans of cellulose in the correct colours that give a very good spray fan and you can get good results from.

cheers for that, thought the light ring was part of the wing but not all of mine appears to agree. with a bit of paint i am sure it will be just fine!

i think it might be ESM for me as i asked for their parts list at about 3.30 pm and it was delivered the next morning!

as for between the wings i just thought i should check the need for beading but this is obviously only the rear.
you can never tell on a 37 year old car what is original and what was done at some time as an inprovement! mine has a speed control mounted under the dash for the wipers, unfortunatly it only interrupts the voltage supply to cut out the wipers not give different speeds as i assume was originally hoped!

just to be clear, there is no filler in the wings/ inner wings just a seam of filler to smooth out the joint.
No welding has ever been done to the front of the car and it does not need any as yet. i have stripped off about 1/2 inch of muck and possibly underseal from the inner wings and the original metal is still their intact! not bad for 37 years and 168000 miles!

do i need the paint code for my car, Rose Taupe!

Any local paint supplier should be able to sell you paint for home spraying, you want paint code GR27.

Well hello again,
Repairs progressing apace and have got to the 'sod it I'll just buy new wings' stage. Having done so I notice they are not quite as well made as the old ones with a ruddy great seam down the side at the front. The guy on the phone said people grind it down and smooth it off with filler before painting. Is this true or just because I'm a girl? 'Cos I'm not about to compromise on looks after all the heartache.

Also, how do I put up pics of my cars on the end of messages for the joy and delight of all?
