1275 from a mg

Post by moggyminor16 »

hi all i need help dose any one know about this 1275 mg engine that i have in my traveller
i went to get a new head gasgit and was told it could bea midget or sprit ,but the head gasgit was teh same as a mg metro one .
what i need to know is i need the tappet setting is it the same as a 1098 012in or diffrent also the touge setting for the head nuts is it still 45 ibf or more , and when setting up the timming its still 1342 but when doing the static setting do you do it so the points are just opening or open then put the lead to that point
please help
thanks all

Right then
The rocker clearance is the same 12 thou cold
The Head nuts are 42lbs for plain studs or 50lbs for studs with 22 or a drill point on them.
Timing is still 1342 set at 7 degrees so the points are just opening with either No 1 or No 4 on the firing stroke, or with both valves on No 4 open and both valves on No 1 closed then rotate the crank until the marks line up and the rotor arm is pointing at No 1 segment of the dizzy cap.
As for the head gasket its certainly the same as used on Minis and the 1275cc range from the same era but not sure about the MG metro but I would have thought it was the same, if all the holes line up there wont be a problem.
Cheers

I may be wrong but I think the valve clearance for the mg metro is 15thou, because of the cam that is used on that model.

Its 12 thou for the MG Midget 1275cc engine when cold, get a manual of ebay then you will have the full spec.

Try to get the better head gasket with metal on both faces - the cheap 'cardboard' ones are useless ! Make sure it's for a 1275 engine - and not for a 998/1098. Best to set exhausts to 15 thou and inlets to 12 thou - this allows for the expansion of the exhaust valve when it gets hot without any risk of the gap closing up. Why do you think it's an MG engine ? Only the MG Metro engine was uprated - it could be MG Metro head and maybe the MG Metro cam - but the block is not useable (without loads of work, and a differnt crankshaft ) in a Minor.

12 shows it is indeed 1275 engine - ANY 1275 engine. MG rocker covers are plentiful on ebay.

I wouldn't let that fool you, these are bolt on items, and the 12 could mean any 1275 engine.

They are all the same !! Except the ones for 998/1098 Mini engine. MG Turbo has a very special (and expensive!) gasket.

I think even more than that.
Yesterday at Moffat classic show I got 3 x 1275 head gaskets FREE - at a FREE autojumble stall. That's my kind of show!!

a rocker cover is no judge of an engine.

I'm 99% sure mines a 1275 marina engine (especially when I compare it against the marina manual I have) but at sometime in its life an MG cover has been used! I'll get that swapped for a nice green morris head some time soon.

Try to get the older type - with the breather tube in the cover.

If its a Midget 1275cc it will have the oil filter the same as the Minor unless its been changed for the screw on mini type.
Both the Marina and the later Ital engines had the oil filter to the back of the engine at an angle, if it was an A+ Ital engine the dizzy will have a different forked style of clamp holding it in place.
Cheers

I might be able to help you out there.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
