Well It's been a week since I droped some red diesel down the bores .. three of the bores now have no fluid visiable from the plugs. The forth (Number three bore as it happens ) has only fallen a tiny bit ..
Should I try some more serious attack ? A tow to 20MPH and then drop the clutch in forth gear ? Anyone got any ideas ?

sounds like your heading towards removing the clyinder head and having a look inside.
if it was a running engine that has been standing a long time, then its rusty cylinders, . The other problem, usually when rebuilt, and starting for the first time, is siezed bearings, which can also happen by driving with no oil for a while.
i think your problem is cylinder surface rust, so removing the head will allow you to clean some of the rust away, as you slowly turn the starting handle as you go.
If the rust is realy bad then you may be heading to the machine shop.
