Engine identity?

Post by winger300 »

I have an engine which was removed from a morris, along with it's gearbox.

Under the spark plug nearest the fan it has the number "44 50", there are no other numbers to be seen, so i assume this is the engine number.

The cylinder head says "B'ham MINIFIN England".

I was told this was a 1098cc morris engine, but now im not so sure.

ok, a little web search tells me that Minifin is an aftermarket rocker cover suitable for Morris and Mini's. The number "44 50" is actually engraved on the engine block, perhaps a metail plate was once attached here.

Maybe with a photo of the engine, some of you chaps might be able to identify it. The gearbox is ribbed btw.... which leads me to another query.

The previous owner of my moggy told me it had a 948cc engine, but it appears the gearbox is ribbed also. I'll have to check the engine number.

the engine number of the unit in the car is 10MA-UA-153173 So i assume this is in fact a 1098cc

In which case i assume the other engine i have is also a 1098cc as it has the same ribbed gearbox. The engine number plate has broken off, so i can't quote it's engine number.

Yep, sounds like all 1098 stuff (more than likely)

engine number

Post by Willie »

I think that the engine number should read 10MA-U-H........
not A???? You can often identify the engine size by looking
on the crankcase just behind the front mounting plate,under-
neath the manifold. You may see '1100' stamped on a plate.
