Electric fans...
So, has anyone fitted a fan from a scrap car, is there a good one that'll fit (that's easy to find and fit?), and how do you control it?

I did have a Nissan Sunny (I think) fan fitted at one point. Looked good 'cos it used the original cowling and fitted in quite well. I controlled it with a thermostatic switch with a manual overide. Boy did it hum when it came on
, which wasn't that often. The switch screwed in to a fitting that was soldered in to the rad. Took me a long time to get together all the fittings and correct switch but it did work a treat. I can't say I noticed any big improvement in MPG though.
Eventually the radiator needed replacing and I didn't want to start altering the replacement so went back to a conventional fan.
If I was going to have another I think I would get a proper kit of parts. I'm sure someone must have done this.......

We can do those. Soldering in things like that I mean.
How much difference in noise would there be, if you switched to electric fan? When it doesn't run I mean.
I gathered that the standard fan is quite noisy

Whoops, fan was from a Datsun Cherry
and was fitted as per the tech tips manual 15:19 (1987) except I kept the cowling to help flow. I remember now that I got the housing for the stat switch from a local rad repair shop. Didn't notice any reduction in noise though without the old fan blades but then my engine isn't the quietest.....

Mrr. Anything that requires modding the radiator is out at the moment; it was a thought pre Pride; I think Nikki's right and I'll have to go with the four fanblades, 'cos having done some serious traffic driving on very hot days the temperature gauge was creeping beyond 90 degrees... And that was an hour or so, not the 4 post crawl through london that Pride's likely to be.
If I had time I'd do radiator things but I think needs must... devil. etc. :-/

I'm running a Metro fan on the 2000, but it's normally fitted as a "pull", whereas due to space I'm using it as a push. Would probably be the same on a Minor, and I seem to recall a lot of fans are designed to work better one way or the other - The Metro one looks to have symetrical blades so I decided I'd give it a go. I'm using a manual switch (means having to keep a close eye on the guage), but it's best to have the fitting for one in the rad really. You can get Kenlowe style ones that sort of fit into the top hose, but I've heard they can be a bit of a pain to seal up properly.Cam wrote:How about the Metro rad/fan. I'm sure 've seen lots of Pugs and French lemons in teh breakers with front mounted fans that appear quite big and slim, might be worth looking at them?
