I noticed similar when I was refitting the speedo after it was rebuilt. I was checking the lights were in the correct holes. As soon as it was back in the dashboard, and the screws tightened, the problem rectified itself. Could be an earthing problem between speedo & car?

Hello G,
check the colour coding of the bullet connections on each side of the inner wing. Also have a look at the connections on the dip switch.
The colours are blue, supply to dip switch, blue\white main beam and blure\red is dip. It sounds as though there is a crossed connection. I'm not sure exactly where the main beam warning light connects in the loom.
If you can't find where the warning light connects you could swap both headlight connections over on the inner wings bullets. This will give two wrongs (Unless that is already wrong) and a correct function.
