Propshafts for Fiat Twincam conversions

Post by Mandy »

I have been looking fo a prop for my twincam conversion and thought I would share some info with those of you who are interested.
I have found a company who make props to fit between Fiat gearboxes and Ford axles. The company is 105speed.com who started out to provide props for people tuning their 105 Fords **!?* sorry swore! Anyway they say they can help me. I will let you know how things go with them. :D
You can check them out on 105speed.com

Removed (too late) as it contravenes the Terms and conditions of the board.

*Edited by moderator.* I contacted them because I cannot find a prop to fit my Fiat twin cam conversion and this is a specialist job. Thanks again, I will have to find another solution to my prop problem. :-?

Surely all that is involved is to mate the Ford end to the fiat prop - a simple engineering task that any machine shop can do (or do it yourself if you are happy with your welding). There are reputable companies out there doing props - check ads in retro cars etc.

There lies the problem I cannot find the Fiat Prop I need. I found a company to mate the two parts together and balance etc. but I need the bit to fit the Fiat gearbox. I bought the engine and gearbox and I'm in the middle of a rebuild. I have sourced or worked out how to make all the brackets, mods etc to install, just feel a complete ass having no prop! If anyone can help provide the prop it would be great.

I'm sure now that we know you require a Fiat prop, someone will come to your rescue. Have you tried wanted ads on E bay, retro car mag, or any of the fiat sites or here:

Thanks for the tips. I will try these. I have a copy of Retro Car. I searched e-bay but not in the last week. This is where I found the engine and gearbox.
I am a bit new to this searching thing and have been out of the Minor Modifying for some while. People and Suppliers have moved on and I am playing catch-up. I am enjoying it though.
Like your car, what engine do you run? You look like a person who enjoys speed from the bike shot. I currently have a tuned 1300cc in my cabrio with a 5 speed box. You may remember it built by CS Auto Classics. I will say no more about the car myself, it has it's own history !
John Beardmore does not have the correct prop bits but has helped with other stuff.

I have always used Dunning & Fairbank (www.propshafts.co.uk/) who can supply both ends from stock for most applications. They are quick and reasonably priced, and you get a complete new balanced propshaft to your spec. All you will have to do is specify the lemgth and the bolt PCD of either end.

Hello Mandy,

I believe there is another way, and that is to have an adapter machined to mate to the Fiat flange and match the propshaft flange of your choice.
Or, if there is not such a huge difference, machine one of the flanges to match the other. (I have not seen a Fiat flange so I cannot guess how close or otherwise it is)

Would you care to enlighten the group and myself as to why you had dealings with us and what we did to you that was so bad ?

I have checked all my correspondence and I can find nothing from you at all.

Mandy, I was going to call you but this seems as good a time as any.

We have spent a good couple of weeks chasing round for a supplier of a yoke for your custom prop and we believe we have sourced one.

When you are ready, if you still want to deal with us, give me a ring and I will send you the yoke to try in your gearbox, if it fits we will make you the prop when you are ready for it, if it doesnt return it to me.

The only charge for this will be the return postage on the yoke.

Look forward to hearing from both of you as I dont like people slagging off our business behind our backs, we work very hard to keep everyone happy.

Not always possible, but if we are doing something wrong then we need to know so we can put it right.

beware of this guy.i have had dealings with him in the past and i found it very unpleasant .better of using local engineering companys in yellow pages for props .
Sorry 105speed about the negative remarks made in your direction and it appears to have come from a 1st time poster and its not the type of remark we encourage.
Also I am moving this as the topic should be under mechanical and not tips.
Cheers

Ian S,

I am pleased you have good dealings with D+F for your props (I used to work there) however it is unlikely that they will have a new stock part off the shelf that will do. I searched every possible gearbox to find something that would match the Fiat spline and found nothing. I used to supply all the Fiat bits from my stock but I only have a few prop parts left that I am keeping for spares and the gearbox we have.

Alec,

This is an adapter but you still need the Fiat reverse sleeve yoke.......

John,

Perhaps you can save some time and postage.

Can you tell me the spec of the Fiat 5 Speed output shaft, ie number of spline etc. this will perhaps see if what we have is going to do the trick.

Cheers Neil

Neil,

There are 2 outputs on the Fiat box. The one above in the picture which is like a Ford box where have a male spline coming out the back of the box and you slide on a female spline.

The other is a 3 prong spider on the back of the gearbox that a guibo (rubber donut) bolts to. Bolting to the guibo is another 3 prong spider with a female spline. This female spline is a standard 1140 series spline. 1140 bits are easily available new.

I thing Mandys gearbox is like the picture above, she sent me a picture but i have forgotton!

Unfortunately I am currently working abroad and my gearboxes are in the UK.

The nearest I found was from a Getrag box (I think), but I tried everything I could get my hands on. i seem to remember Fiat gearsticks being used on these `boxs in rally cars which made me hopeful.

Fiat Propshaft

Post by fsk658 »

Hi I had a propshaft modified for the pick up I am working on. It has a 2ltre Fiat engine with 5 speed gearbox to a Toyota back axle. The company who did my work were very helpful and keep most parts in stock they can even make new props to order.

Is it too late to join this conversation?
I have a Fiat Twin Cam with matching 5 speed box and the propshaft is a 2 peice affair that look as if it has come from the Fiat as well.
It rumbles/vibrates something awfull.
Not sure what the back axel is may be a marina.
Can you fiit a single peice propshaft? or does it have to be the 2 peice? I have a 'standard' propshaft from a 1098, can this be modified to take the 'doughnut'?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Roger
Cheers

Best bet is to refurbish what you have. You should be able to get parts at a motor factors, or send the lot to a company that refurbishes them. http://www.reco-prop.com/
