judder in reverse
when i select reverse gear and bring the clutch up to the bite the car judders, it's worse reversing uphill, could this be an engine mount problem?
also how are the rubber suspension bump stops fitted on the rear axle? i'm missing one and the other needs replacing as it's perished, the one i have is fitted with a plastic cable tie!

are these the right bump stops, i can't see how the u-bolts would secure them.

Yes they are correct. They have a 'lip' at the edge facing the camera which you can't see in the picture. The U-bolts fit around this 'lip' and secure the bumpstop to the axle.
Incidently, a lot of Minors judder in reverse (and 1st). It's a problem that never got solved properly at the factory. Some Minors do it worse than others. My Gracie does it in reverse but not in 1st. You can chase your tail trying different replacement rubbers and whatnot and it might never improve!
But as a start, just check the condition of the engine & gearbox mounting rubbers, the top engine steady mountings & bushes and the gearbox steady cable.

Another cause is oil ingress into the clutch housing. That's what gave mine it's *terrible* reverse gear judder...

I too have fairly appalling judder in reverse at times. For some reason, it doesn't happen always. I have found though that as soon as the clutch is fully engaged, it smooths right out again. Makes reversing onto the hardstanding in front of the garage potentially interesting! Hmmm.... I wonder if there are any railway station buffers for sale on ebay?

Do any of the members know much about general car repairs (modern) not just Mogs?
Just the Micra has a recurring problem of reverse not engaging 'till the 2nd or 3rd attempt to put it in... why?

Unfortunately, the new Micra is not living up to the superb reliabillity and quality control of the previous models. Something to do with being owned by Renault, perhaps??

It's the only problem I've had... other than when it ran empty and we dragged up a load of crud from the fuel tank, so it gave up when i hit 40mph and started to get slower... and slower...
Just the damned reverse problem!
Oh and it sometime's gives up when you set off slowly to do a manouver... daft car.

Our 2nd car is also a Micra, now just over 2 years old. The only problem I noticed was that water collects in the cup at the top of the front shock absorber mounting, which then rusts the nut beautifully! The garage de-rusted the nut, and waxoyled it, but to my mind this is but a temporary "fix" to the problem. The real problem is that water should not be directed there by the under-bonnet channelling in the first place! Apart from that, and a front indicator bulb blowing, (which took ages to get at!) it has been a good car, though I prefer the Morris needless to say!
