Youv'e been keeping quiet about having these big drum brakes Ray !! Obviously been squirreling them away when others weren't looking!

My spare set came up on ebay about a month ago - not very expensive but then again, not working either.

Well, well, well, your off for a week and controversy strikes out. TwincamTurbo52's comments were deleted by the time I read throough this link however I would agree to some extent with split54's sentiment.

People hijack threads fairly often because they feel they're comments might add to the debate, or quite frankly they just feel like it. There seemed to be a very defensive approach in this thread.

Also perhaps PMing someone rather than just posting on the site would appear a little different from normal. Though perhaps because no one ever PM's me I'm the odd one out.

I aslo agree that breaking comments done line by line can also be very annoying and wind someone up quite a lot.

I just feel that 'we' as a community have probably not come out of this quite as well as we could have, and the fact that someone has left because of it is rather dissappointing.

I don't know why this topic is so controversial - it aired on another site with similar results about a year ago. We should all just learn that we are all different, and who cares how we choose to stop our car - remember they are faster without brakes - yes Onne, even in Holland without hills

A 'modified' section may not be a bad idea after all, where folk can discuss upgrades without fear of retribution (although all I thought this thread was about was an innocent survey).
I didn't open this thread until yesterday as I felt I had nothing to contribute, and was surprised to read what was contained in it - slightly disappointed if truth be told - but let's move on.

Probably a long shot but I wonder if the Hindustan Ambassador brakes were/are the same as the Wolseley/Riley ones. I think they have front disks now but they certainly were drums all round at one point and perhaps still are for the domestic market...

Pete & Wal,

We are pretty tolerant of each other on here generally, and discussions about drum brakes or modification are not really a problem. Actually, two of the biggest sticklers for originality are probably myself & Judge, but we both also drive modified cars too!

I have a foot in both camps, so I'm happy either way. I have no problem what engines, brakes or whatever is fitted as long as the driver is happy.

What happened in THIS thread is that Wanderingstar asked who else was using Wolesley brakes (out of interest) and was then derided by TwincamTurbo52 saying that if you use drum drakes you'll end up in a pine box and that it's not clever.

I took exception to this as he also gave the impression that everyone with drum brakes was a sunday driver. This I felt was unfair, so I gave my opinion that drum brakes are perfectly fine if you drive accordingly and not ride people's bumpers.

He then got very angry and started slating the club, it's members and the Morris Minor. This I thought was very childish behaviour. I responded to each of his comments by asking why he felt this way and instead of answering and taking part in 'normal' debate, he got offensive, started deleting his posts and then asked for his account to be deleted.

I asked him if he was sure and he again asked to be deleted, so I did so.

The post now looks disjointed and only my comments remain (as he deleted his), so all you have now is my retorts, which on their own might give the wrong impression!

split54, I think you are taking the 'P'. To coin a phrase - it's not big and it's not clever. I don't think folk on here consider it a 'p*****g' contest regarding knowledge etc. There is something for everyone on here, so let's leave it at that.

(Wol/Ril brake content) Does anyone know if you can get asbestos linings ANYWHERE? I BELEIVE that asbestos ones were somewhat superior to the materials that superceded then, although that may no longer be true. If you're gonna fit drums, might as well fit good shoes! Also, what is the perceived wisdom of filing a bevel on the leading or trailing edge of shoes.

AFAIK traders are not legally allowed to sell them nowadays, but the modern asbestos free materials do work (but not necessarily as well as the old ones).
The best bet is to get 2nd hand - places like Ebay and maybe some of the classic car breakers.
However if you've got the 9" brakes then you'll not have so much to worry about compare to folks still running weeny 7" drums.

Isn't Mexico still allowing asbestos brakes? Anyone?

I put reman'd rear Wolseley shoes on the Lenham and they really sucked compared to the ancient ones that came off. I also put Mintex (1177?) pads on the front calipers instead of the previous EBC Greenstuff brand. They sucked too until you reeeeeeealy stood on them hard. There is some real benefit to getting a decent material match and putting a bias valve in the line to the rear brakes. OK, this is a Lenham but the technology is almost identical.
