Grease and Oil

Hey there, just a quicky, what oil are you guys putting in your 1098cc unleaded beasts and what grease are we using for the things we need to grease - ta

I've been using Castrol LM grease for the greasy bits - except for wheelbearings where a high temp grease is better (normal grease will run out of whaeel bearings if the brakes get very hot)

For engine oil I have often used Castrol GTX 15/40 but prefer to get a good 20/50 (something rated with at least SF, prefferably SJ or higher and at least A2/B2). A good 20/50 doesn't have to cost more than £6 or £7 but if you go for brand name rather than good rating it will be expensive.

Tim, the Black Cat garage at Smallthorne (just past Holden bridge after the speed camera - on the left) sell 'Falcon' oil in a black container. It's SF rated and £6.50 a gallon and it's pretty good stuff. That's what I'm using and it's ideal for a 1098.

If you are ever round that way grab some.

do you put the same oil that goes in the engine, in the gearbox?? and what oil do we use for the carburetter damper lubrication?? - ta.

Indeed, same oil in the gearbox. Never put the hypoid oil in there, save that for the diff! I use the same engine oil in the carb dashpot also, though people use all sorts there, from the real McCoy dashpot oil from Burlen, who now make the SU carbs, to 3-in-1!

so, hypoid oil only in the rear axle.

same engine oil in the engine/gearbox and carb,

and grease on me nipples!! - correct?

EEEexcept for the steering rack nipple. In that you put Hypoid EP90. I have a feeling it's 10 strokes of the greasegun-filled-withEP90 for that one.

Don't put grease in there or thing'll go a bit pear-shaped.

I use an old push action tecalemit grease gun especially for that task. Saves having to de-grease the grease gun!

how the blinkin' heck to you get the oil past the nipple on the steering rack??? - is there a special gun, or end or do I have to blow it in with a straw?????

Yes you can use a grease gun! I believe some people remove the nipple and dribble in the ep 90

I remove the nipple and use an old oil can to squirt oil in there.

I'm using a synthetic oil from Amsoil in the gearbox at the mo. I had originally bought it for a Polo but never got round to using it. I put it in Joe because third gear was a bit noisy. It seems to have done the trick as it it quiet so far. Cross fingers
