PAINT - OR THE LACK OF IT

Got my 'Automobile' mag. through yesterday, a disturbing report on paint supply. It's happening, The deadline for phasing out supplies of cellulose and 2 pack from the wholesalers to the trade is the end of this year. After that paint shops will need a licence to use them and only if they install very expensive equipment to minimise pollution will they be granted one. The trade reckon that over 2000 small paint shops will cease trading.
The only paint available 'over the counter' will be the water based ones. If you need paint the suggestion is buy it now.

Nah, I've had it on good authority that cellulose won't be banned by the EU. The confusion lay in the EU not knowing that we still used it as apparently they have not used it since the war!

Now that they are aware that the classic car movement has a use for it they are perfectly fine with us using it!

2 pack however is a different story...

two pack paint will still be available until the end of 2007. All high solid paints will then be unavailable, unless by special licsence for vintage or veteran car restorers. Will post more on this tommorow, once I've digested the latest directives from the good o'l EU.

Yes, it cheered me up no end too! I heard it from a committee member of the FBHVC so I think it's genuine.

But the question is- do I have to be a qualified restorer with facillities in order to get the paint, or is it enough to be using it for a classic car that originally used Cellulose??

I'm thinking of future restorations after I've done the 4-door.

To be honest, the so-called "environmental concerns" are poppycock, as the cellulose thinners contain simmilar chemicals to petrol, and in fact are less toxic than petrol as unleaded fuel contains benzene (a carcinogen) and TBME- also a nasty, and I bet far more litres of petrol is evaporated/ spilt etc each year than litres of thinners evaporated to the atmosphere during resprays.

-any way- rant over! I'm going to get me some paint just in case as my local supplier sell cellulose for aboiut £15 a litre
