confused

Post by Peetee »

Can anyone confirm the wiring and terminal layout on the wiper motor for a late Minor?
For some reason the relevant diagram shows only two wires (green and black with green) but mine is per the earlier cars with an additional black lead to the fuel pump earth.

Great - that's got the things working sort of. But now they sweep well across the screen but when you switch them off they blow the main fuse!
I've got through 3 of them in minutes!!
This sounds like a problem with the switch - except it hasn't been touched - or is it now that I've cleaned the contacts on the motor there is more current/volts passing through and causing a short/tripping the fuse?

wiper motor

Post by Willie »

You should double check the wires on your wiper motor mine has only two
contacts, the third wire(black) is screwed directly to the end of the motor
casing. The two contacts are Green/top and Green/black at the bottom.
The switch supplies earth as the motor is live when ignition is on.

Should the wipers park after the switch is returned to 'off'?

park

Post by Willie »

YES, if the wiper motor has a round dome on top with a wire running off of it.
That is the self parking control and you adjust the park position by slackening the screws which clamp it,after marking its position with pencil, and rotating it
slightly by trial and error until the park is in the desired area.

OK so I definitely have a problem here then. The wipers have never self parked. The cover was removed and the gearing within was re-lubed because the wipers were really slow. The contacts to that top cover were cleaned and then the three contacts on the outside of the unit. That's when I discovered the black lead to the fuel pump had come adrift (it had been bare wire wrapped and not given a crimp ring end  ).

So, to recap; the wires maybe wrongly placed, the auto park doesn't work and the wipers work but the fuse blows when the switch is put to 'off'.

wiper

Post by Willie »

Please clarify, My 1957 wiper motor has TWO terminals (on an insulated strip)
the third wire (black) is screwed directly to the end casing on the motor. the
two terminals have Green on the top and Green/black on the bottom??
The black lead on the fuel pump should connect from one of the mounting
bolts to the cylindrical body( to remove any chance of a bad earth due to the
fact that the diaphragm is between the base of the pump and the cylindrical
section).

Thanks Lee. I can see that your set up has three terminals but it is different to Joe's. On his the terminals aren't shrouded. I'd like to think they are in the same order but I've learned never to assume. :(
AU and Willie, do your motors have shrouded terminals like Lee's?

Gracie & my 4-door also have the same set-up as Lee's, BUT the black wire goes to the top lucar connector and not to the side of the body. My lucar terminal ends are also shrouded on both cars.

you can adjust where it parks by undoing the top and moving to the right or left

terminals

Post by Willie »

No, my 1957 wiper motor has non shrouded terminals (2) and the third
wire is black and is screwed straight to the body which is why I was asking
for clarification of your set-up. Image........what image!!

Given the gale force winds out there at the mo
the cover blew off Dotty today.
I stayed at work late as there was no point coming home to work on cars - I would have got drenched just carrying the toolbox to/from the garage this evening.
Needless to say, to get home afdter 3 hours of torrential rain to find there was no cover on my baby - a very sad moment :(
Rear floor pan 2 incheses deep with water etc.. etc..
