any 20/50 whatever £4.99 oil.

there are better £9.99 oils but not worth the money untill you have the engine rebuilt.

castrol gtx and duckhams (the green colour one) are good oils for the minor

20W/50 oil is best really.

The most important thing is to check the 'quality rating' on the can. It should be at least SF or SE. You should be able to get an SF/SE rated 20W/50 oil for around £6.50 or so. Most of the Minor specialists sell it if you are finding it difficult to get. :D

ASDA stuff at £2.74 for 4.5 litres has given me no problems in either Minor or Mini for several years. It's made by Tetrosyl - yes, it's probably re-cycled, so what!

I just knew! ;)

Personally, I've used both cheapy and expensive oils- but kept the cheapie in for a much shorter period of time as it lacks the additives which prolong the effective life of the oil.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

when looking at quality ratings, Cam mentioning SE and SF, what is the better of the two? I currently use SL rated oil. Is that bad?

about £7 or £8 per 5 liters

Exactly - don't expect the ASDA stuff to last for ever. I change it every year whether it needs it or not.

The ASDA oil does not comply to the most basic of the 'quality' standards (or they would put the rating on the can), so you can't expect it to protect the engine as well as a 'quality' oil.

These cheap oils also are prone to loosing pressure after a good motorway thrashing and I for one would only use them for lubricating door hinges! Each to their own though.

Onne, SL oil is VERY good. Have a look at this for clarification: http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html
