I used to clean mine with petrol though, and then soak them in the oil

Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald are the founders, so I found on the net.
They started in 1964 with a motorcycle business (selling and rental)
Then they were asked by several customers for quality airfilters, which would keep the dust out of their beloved engines, when doing off-road racing.
So in 1969 they introduced the K&N High Flow filter. The rest is known I guess
