It is very possible on Minor rims (I've done it), but not on modern tubeless rims.
You are more likely to scratch and chip the rim using tyre levers, and as you can normally get it done for £5 cash it's not usually worth the blood sweat and tears.

Yes - I change my tyres regularly - using two levers about 12" long. When putting back on - be sure to use some hand cleaner on the rims as lubricant.

hello Roger,

the procedure is realtively easy, but you will need something to break the bead away from the rim. Once the bead is broken, push, with your foot, one side of the tyre bead hard into the wheel well and simultaneously lever up the opposite side over the rim. Ease the tyre over the rim all the way round, then turn the wheel over and lever the other side over the rim. Here a rubber mallet is useful to hammer the rest of the tyre off the rim else lever it off.

sounds easy I've got a wheel to refurb so I'll practice taking the tyre off. I can always get it put back onat the shop and balanced later.

Hello Roger,

it is, as long as you can break the bead, that needs a tool to do it, refitting a tyre is also easy.
