I was inspecting Joemog for the source of this vibration and have found that the bellhousing has a crack running backwards between the top two bolts that attach it to the engine.
I'm sue it hasn't anything to do with the vibration but has anyone seen this before or would like to predict if I need to do something about it quick?
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
I'd be looking for a new gearbox methinks.....
In the meantime I would drill a 1/16" hole at the end of the crack to relieve the stress and stop the crack from lengthening. That is a method used on perspex aircraft canopies.
I remember when I was in a gliding club, a chap had bought a new canopy at great expense. A few weeks later he found a crack, so drilled the ends to stop it running. He then brushed the swarf away... the "crack" brushed away too... a hair! To say that the air was blue was a slght understatement.........

Very unusual PT - never heard of this before. Have heard of backplates cracking - but not bell housings ! Does the crack run into the clearance hole for the rack ?
