petrol pump

Post by sidsmith »

HI ALL, i am about to change "Mungo" a '56 splitscreen to Neg' earth as per tech' tips CD, what I would like to know is.....the petrol pump I have on the car is a SU elec' pump with the live feed coming from behind the dash to the top connector on the pump and an earth wire from the base of the pump that is bolted to the battery carrier, therefore will I have to change the connection for it to work on Neg' earth, your advice would be appreciated.....Sid

You should not have to alter the wiring to the pump.

If the pump is the original type ELECTRICAL one (with points) then it will work either way. However, if it's the more modern ELECTRONIC version then you'll have to get a negative earth version or change back to the original type.

Just consider radios, washers etc before you go ahead.

But - you WILL need to clean the points on the pump. They will have 'hill + crater' effect from running +ve earth, when you change over this will reverse, so to avoid trouble - make them flat !
