What things would you do to make the engine run more efficiently, i.e bigger carb etc.

1. large valve head - easiest option being the 12G295 (try ebay)
2. 1.5 inch or HIF38 carb with -
3. Alloy inlet manifold
4. 1.5 inch exhaust system or (cheaper but not so good option) Mini 1000 manifold with stainless standard bore system. (you will have to remove the inlet portion)
Lastly and most important
5. Rolling road set up.
If you stick with the standard exhaust size you could get the lot for £200 if you're a wise buyer.

Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
I have just fitted 12g940 head from 1275 Mini engine - with 38 HIF SU on MG Metro inlet manifold. All in cost so far = £30 !! It goes like stink - but desperately needs a decent exhaust manifold and a bigger bore system. I modified the head by sinking the exhaust valves by 40 thou to get clearance - this head needs no skimming - the 295 head has much smaller valves and DOES need skimming, but no valve sinking. I removed a 295 head to fit this head - and it's very noticeably better now. No, the 295 head is not for sale!
