Reversing light

I've just bought a very nice old "Wipac" reverse lamp to fit on the back of my Traveller and am unsure where to wire it up in relation to which wires go where to the coil. Via a switch on the dash is no problem, but where in the engine bay? Advise would be appreciated.

I'm puzzled. Why would it involve any wires to the coil? Battery out/switch (illuminated, naturally)/lamp/earth (return to battery) surely? Oh, and chuck a suitable fuse into that little lot too, as close as poss to where the electrickery leaves the battery. I hope I'm not just being too dense...

Is there a way of wiring it up without going straight to the battery? Would look a lot tidier

Take it from a key controlled live at the fuse box. The big thick purple wire (horn) is one of those, but i'd still put an in line fuse in place - those ones are 35A, so aren't offering much protection. If your car has an inline fuse beneath the box already, that's 10A and may be a better bet, though (I'm guessing) still rather too high. I wasn't sure if I was missing something, so I was just trying to describe the circuit simply

Surely the purple wire is non-ign dependent? For a switched live (key controlled) it'd be coming from the green feed from the fuse box

As for switch position, I put mine above the existing choke switch along with a panel bulb to reduce the likelyhood of leaving it on when driving forwards.

you can of course buy a switch kit which fits at the base iof the gearstick. Then it will work whenever you're in reverse.

Grumpy's used to do the kit, I don't know if ESM are making them now or if they've got any. It was ESM that took over the stock when Grumpy's stopped trading wasn't it?

I saw it advertised in Matters some time ago, and I also talked to someone that had used a kit.
Not sure who's kitit was that was advertised, but try ESM, Bull Motif, B'Ham (and lastly C.Wares) as they account for most stuff.

you get hold of a 1275 spridget box (with provision for reversing light switch), and take the remote off, put it on your 1098 minor box. Warning tho - the switches are bloody difficult to find, if anyone can please let me know!

yes esm bought out mr grumpy
not sure they are selling his stuff yet though.
the grumpy kit was based on i think a mini switch on a `U1 plate that was bent up and attached to the 3 bolts holding the gear lever on.
you then ran the necessary wiring.
you had to build up the tunnel cover under the gaiter, which also led to splitting of the gaitor

I think I'll go for running the wire from the green wire feed from the fuse box and fitting an illuminated switch on the dash as suggested. Seems easiest and neatest option. Thankyou all.

yep the easiest, do not forget to turn it off after reversing though!!!!!!!

lol ... have found a very nice old illuminated pull switch which will look right in my Traveller, so hopefully the light will catch my eye so that I'll remember to push it back in!
