My 1098 has that cover on the side... Maybe the late engines had it and the early ones didn't?

The Austin and the Morris sumps appear to be identical - and interchangable. Incidentally, if you so have an Austin engine in your car, don't scrap it if you ever put a new motor in, they're a fair bit harder to find. Do check if it's a low compression version though, a lot of the LCVs were.

I'm (hopefully) going to be swapping my engine fairly shortly anyway as the bottom end is rather knackered (possibly the cyl head too).

Is there any way of telling if it's a low compression engine? I suspect not as it'll do nearly 80mph indicated. Can you tell from the number?

The engine number on the little plate next to the alternator appears to start "LOV...", so does that mean it's a low comp engine?

But am I right in thinking some of the last vans etc had an 848cc version of the A series - like the Mini engine ?

Only the A35 vans came with the 848cc engine - it was never fitted to the Minor.

Just in case anyone can make any sense out of it - my engine number is:
"LOV/189E/H45789"
