Red Ignition light getting brighter

Post by WillsMck »

Hi, I bought this lovely black traveller recently. I drove it yesterday for the first time. It starts easily, red light goes out. As soon as you rev to go away the light comes on and gets brighter, once you reach quite high revs, it seems to go off again. Once I change gear and the engine revs are lower it's off then goes through the same cycle again.

I think also that there is less power from the car on accelleration than I would expect.

My knowledge is extremely basic, however checked that the HT leads were fitting properly, they seemed to be different from my other Morris, my other has leads which at the end where thet meet the plugs are a 90 degree socket; these are straight.

Can anyone offer any help or advice - was going to take her out today on Historic Vehicle Day - but don't want her to misbehave!

Thanks

Assuming that you have Dynamo fitted it is worth checking that you can JUST
turn the fan by hand. If it is quite easy to turn the fan then adjust the fan belt.
If this is ok then you should buy a pair of dynamo brushes and fit them which is a straightforward job. If you would rather not do this then a reconditioned
Dynamo is quite cheap. If the problem persists after checking the above then you will get further advice on here.

If the dynamo brushes are OK have a look at the contacts in the voltage regulator.

The are best cleaned by drawing a strip of paper between them.

If you hjave an alternator, I've seen that symptom with a failed diode in the pack.

well, i've checked the fan belt, fitted new bushes, the light still comes on. I am more concerned by the loss of power, it doesn't want to pull away - the power is much less than in my other Morris. The car doesn't want to accelerate however when you change gear and the rev's lower it seems a bit better. I've had the engine timing checked - it was slightly out, but does not seem to have made much difference. I also think that the engine is a lot warmer than I would have thought even after only five minutes driving.

Any help would be appreciated - also if anyone can recommend a good mechanic near Glasgow that would be helpful.

Thanks

Wills

hav a look at the carb. Maybe it is way to lean, causing loss of power and overheating. All the essential fuids are there I presume?

I hate to say it, but with the exceotion of the red light, these are VERY like the symptoms mine was displaying before I took the engine out and found out that one of the pistons had burnt through. I hope it's nothing as bad as that, and wish you luck finding a mechanic.
