I don't know, but suspect it isn't a viable or easy option.
I fitted a reversing light (genuine Prince of Darkness) years ago and just used a pull on/push off switch, with a built in yellow warning lamp.

Later MG Midgets had reversing lights. The switch is in the remote shifter. Just exchange the remote shifter and run some wires.

Somewhere on here you can find a solution to this using a micro-switch at the base of the gear lever. The post was by the ever-ingenious Declan Burns.

I would suspect buying and fitting a later remote shifter is not a very practical or financially sound option for such a simple solution.
Why complicate things by sourcing, fitting correctly and wiring in a microswitch when the simplest option is to fit a manual switch, with warning light, and wiring that is needed anyway?

When I was young, I wanted an automatic reversing light, and, like Declan, fitted a microswitch against the base of the gear lever. With more experience, I realised that a manual switch and warning lamp was much better - it's more reliable, but also can be used without having to engage reverse gear, and so can be used to illuminate the ground when looking for something dropped in the dark, or when hitching up a trailer. I am not encouraging this, but I suppose that one could even "flash" someone behind who is too close or dazzling with main beam. Much more convenient and versatile.

Willum has twin 1960s reversing lamps powered from a switch on the dash with a red warning light. As previously mentioned it is very useful for reversing into the carport after dark!

Can anyone suggest an adhesive to secure that parcel shelf foam covering? I have tried trim/carpet adhesive and contact adhesive without success, as can be seen.
