rear lights

I've got a 61 car, but with the option of flashing indicators which means the sidelights at the front flash clear and at the rear red. The right hand side stops working periodically but then is OK for a while after I've cleaned the contacts and opened them up a bit. Not reliable though. The new units for this year car available form ESM only have two wires not three like mine so I'm thinking replacements are not available. Is that right? Can anyone offer a solution. See attached photo.

Actually perhaps I'm not being clear - the problem is just right rear.

It relies on the body of the bulb earthing through the bulb holder as well as the two contacts. I've had replacement bulbs that didn't fit tight enough in the holder.
Is it only the flasher as it's the same bulb as your stop light.
Or is the issue with the DB unit on inner wing.

Presumably your original lamp base has a separate black earth wire but the new units from ESM earth directly to the mountings? This would not prevent you from using the flasher system you have at present.

Since your lamp base looks in good condition, have you tried cleaning the metal where it touches the metal side of the light bulb? As Bill says, this is the earth connection and it must be secure as well as clean to make a good contact. Also follow the black wire and ensure a good earth there.

First of all let me say thanks to you two for your replies. You have helped me a few times - very much appreciated. If I move the bulb from side to side it starts to work for a little while. I have used fine emery paper to clean the contacts that make contact with the base of the bulb. Bit tricky to try to do the same with the inside of the bulb housing. I also tried with a fibre glass pencil I use on my model railway. On reflection I think it is probably the earth that is the problem, so I'll have another go tomorrow. I'll not rush to buy another unit, but if I did am I right in thinking that if it earths through the body I just leave the black wire unattached?

Also while I'm at it. Do you recognise the dynamo in the attached photo. I was expecting a Lucas C39, but this one has spade connectors, so is it a C40?

And finally, do you recognise the oil filter adapter? Doesn't look like the ESM one. It is I think the only non-original item on the car apart from front seat belts.

You're welcome.

I would take a piece of emery paper and roll it up into a tube with the abrasive side on the outside. Feed the tube of emery paper into the ring that holds the bulb and twist it back and forth to clean the hard to reach inside surface. I know those glass pencils. Very good for small battery contacts.

With the new type rear lamp assembly you would connect the black earth wire to a mounting stud at the back via a ring terminal secured with a nut.

Regarding the dynamo it will be marked on the body with the model number if it is a genuine Lucas dynamo. It won't if it is a Far East copy.

The oil filter head appears to be original as it is marked "Purolator". There are two different ways to convert to a spin-on type filter. The first way is to replace the filter head and the second way is to retain the original filter head but fit an adapter inside the head so that it can take a spin-on filter. The second way is much easier, retains the original head, retains the blocked filter warning (only on filter heads that had this) but is actually more expensive for the adapter than it is for a modern spin-on head.

Looking at the general colour/condition of that lamp holder, it's your problem. Looks like it needs a good clean.
Having a multi-meter is always useful.... you can get a basic one for about £10.

Further to my post last night, as you have a DB10 system, you have several other potential points of poor connection which accumulatively could give you a problem.
Your supply to the RH Rear Indicator is via Terminal 1 & 7 on the DB10 plus the internal contacts.

If your DB10 is still a 1960s original, the cover is removable to clean the internal contacts. If it's a modern replacement, the cover is just concealing to sealed relays.

24 is the Right Stop/Indicator DB10 terminals highlighted.
