Old type water heater tap
Hi chaps, does anyone know what diameter the old style heater tap is? I've changed the original cable type heater valve on my '69 4 door to the older style tap when fitting the 1275cc engine. The BMC workshop manual I have lists 2 shims, one of 0.014 in , the other 0.028 in. I need to fit a shim or ...

Heater hose connections
Hi chaps,
not sure if this is the right area for this post but bear with me.
On the late type Smiths heater which is the inlet and which is the outlet? I'm working onthe assumption that the top hose is the inlet and the bottom the outlet. Can anyone confirm?
Regards
John

Re: 1275 A+ with 3.9 ratio diff
Changing to a Ford axle is more trouble than it's worth, quite a bit needs to be modified before it can be fitted. It's just as easy to refurbish a Minor one, especially as I have a spare axle casing in the garage.

Thanks Roy.
I'll start with the Speed Flush as that's the easiest to use and see how things go.
Cheers

Re: Ford 5 Speed 'box speedo cable fitting.
Thanks Matt for the info on the Ford speedo. I think the best thing to do is to get a 1:1 ratio right angle adaptor and then have the speedo recalibrated. Surely somewher there must be a way to calculate the error in speedo reading for different diff ratio's. The car is running Bridgestone 145R14 ty...

1275 A+ with 3.9 ratio diff
Hi chaps, does anyone have any experience of running a Minor fitted with the 1275cc engine from an Ital, Ford 5 speed 'box and a 3.9 ratio diff? What sort of acceleration and top speed should I be expection from this setup? The engine is fitted with a big valve 12G940 head running the standard cam t...

Cooling sysytem and block flushing
Hi chaps, I've recently changed the engine in my '69 4 door Minor for a 1275cc Morris Ital A+. The engine runs well, but before it was replaced I cracked the block drain plug only to be faced by a solid wall of chalk. I removed this concretion the best I could using a screwdriver and replace the dra...

Re: Ford 5 Speed 'box speedo cable fitting.
I spotted that too!! Add that to the £100ish for speedo servicing and recalibration, oh, and the cost of a new speedo cable as the Ford one has a different fitting, it's all beginning to mount up. I stopped counting at 1700 quid for the cost of upgrading to the 1275 engine and 5 speed 'box, but I gu...

Re: Oil pressure warning light
I agree that the oil pressure warning light is a poor substitute for a pressure gauge. The gauge is the next thing on the list. The light went out after adding the oil and stayed out afterwards. I'm hoping the light coming on was a "false positive" as it hasn't happened again. I'd only gon...

Re: Ford 5 Speed 'box speedo cable fitting.
I think the right angle drive is probably the way to go as it will eliminate the quite tight turn from the speedo drive on the gearbox to run alongside the chassis leg.

Re: Rear axle filler plug
Thanks Richard,
I believe that the 3.9 diff doesn't have the filler plug in the diff housing, so at least I can refill the rear axle when I come to swop them over.

Rear axle filler plug
Hi chaps, which rear axles fitted to Minors have a filler plug. The axle I have fitted to my '69 4 door has a filler plug (I assume) about 1/4 of the way up on the domed section. I have noticed that on other forum post it mentions that a filler is omitted. Can ayone shed any light on this issue? Reg...

Oil pressure warning light
Hi chaps, whilst testing to see if my rerouting of the speedo cable had any effect I had the oil pressure warning light come on on my 1275cc Ital engine. I immediately switched off the engine, opened the bonnet and checked the oil level on the dip stick. The oil level was at the MIN mark and after a...

Re: which warning light is for what?
I was going to ask what the other orange warning light on the speedo was. The oil pressure warning on my speedo has always been above the main beam warning. I guess it must have been replace as such at some point before I took ownership of the car.

Re: electrical problems after engine swap
I think I've managed to sort out the majority of the electrical problems. I took the speedo out of the dash this morning, with a view to temporarily replacing it with the spare 1280 tpm speedo I had lying about. Turns out this speedo is knackered, as the mounting brackets have been snapped off from ...

Re: Ford 5 Speed 'box speedo cable fitting.
I've pulled the cable further through the bulk head in an effort to reduce the potential strain on the speedo mechanism, however, this hasn't cured the maniacal wavering of the speedo needle. More often than not the needle is resting on the underside of the stop :( . I'm going to try easing the cabl...

Re: Ford 5 Speed 'box speedo cable fitting.
I suppose i could try running it under the gearbox, at the moment it runs down the driver's side chassis leg in loose curves, which might be adding to the problem. I've still got the mechanical linkages on my car too.

Re: Ford 5 Speed 'box speedo cable fitting.
The cable is the one supplied with the Birmingham Morris Minor Centre's gearbox fitting kit. I'm going to take the floor up (again) tomorrow so I will see if I can reroute the cable in a more gentle route and see if this stops the 0-110 mph speedo readings

Ford 5 Speed 'box speedo cable fitting.
Hi chaps, does anyone with a type 9 'box have any advice on the routing of the speedo cable? As the cable exit is at right angles to the gearbox, i'm guessing that the cable should exit as straight as possible, however, the chassis rail is quite close meaning that the cable would have to make a pret...

Re: Wildly inaccurate speedo
I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try to clean the speedo head myself, anyway the speedo will need to be recalibrated at some point due to the new gearbox. I'm wondering if 13 inch wheels would address part of the inaccuracy problem. The instructions with the 5 speed 'box say that the speedo will be ...
