Sorry to jump on this thread but ref the oil pump causing a leak. I had this on my 1275 Marina (same pump arrangement?) The pump cover had somehow worn away causing a large leak at the back of the engine so it can happen!

I'd budget at least £1k to have it supplied and fitted. My recon was about £600 + £200 or so fitting. Then theres the cost of consumables and the clutch bits needed doing anyway. Was thinking of fitting myself but glad I didn't as the first replacement was U/S on fit so it then became the garages re...

Just to add a bit more fuel to this topic! I would avoid mixing grades if possible as it could affect the performance of the oil but then I'm sure on a normally driven A-series it wouldn't be a problem. As to non API spec oils, I would possibly use them on an engine of unknown history or one which h...

Oil consumption - limits

Just reading all these various topics over the past few months about oil consumption. I've not seen anything that gives a sort of limit. What would be considered normal for a 1098cc engine, say new and part worn? The 500mile to the pint has been suggested for new which would equate to about 1000 mil...

MGM Spares

I noticed that their phone number has changed and are now part of BM, has this always been the case or is it a recent development? Only asking as MGM were quite close to my parent so I could always save on postage! I guess it's tuff in the classics spares business at the moment. All the more reason ...

Thought I'd better close out the query I had. It was the drums that were worn so after replacement and a right good bleed all is now better, just bedding everything in. Thanks for your help.

I tried adjusting with drums off and they went up and down ok, it's more the rear cylinder on l/h side that goes to the end of it adjustement, but to say they're new shoes alround I was suprised how much I had to wind them out to bite. When I get the drums off again I'll double check it's the larger...

The shoes were new ones, both sides. I will probably get a set of drums then, just making sure there was nothing else i could have missed. Makes sense actually as the r/h side had plenty of adjustment spare and this would have been the inefficient side so perhaps the l/h has worn more.
Thanks.

Brake adjustement

Here we go another brakes question! I've just replaced both r/h front cylinders due to on leaking and the other siezed, I replaced the shoes as well due to the contamination. All went well except I think I still have air in there somewhere. But one thing that is troubling be, the L/H front shoes are...

I havn't really run it off load, just driven at about 45-50mph. I'll see how it goes over the next hundred miles or so (it is a warranted engine so if it aint right it'll hopefully be sorted). One theory is that because the old engine was a heavy user of oil there may be residues in the exhaust but ...

Running in a new engine

I've been having trouble latley with my Traveller using a lot of oil, after much deliberation I decided to get a recon engine. This is now fitted and in the process of being broken in. I'm a bit concerned however about the amount of smoke from the exhaust. When pulling away or idling there's clouds ...

It's not a magneto, just a single coil to which the HT leads connect, it fires every revoloution so there is a wasted spark.
Guess what my other car is....... 8)

Result :D

Fitted the old alternator in conjuction with the new wire direct to the solenoid and all is well. One thing with this alternator is it needs to be at quite fast idle to stay on line. I will probably still get another in case it is on its way out.
Thanks all.

Have just tried slaving a wire direct from the alternator to the solenoid but still the same, but when I check the volts fro the +ve output to alternator casing it's way high :-? . Didn't get time to swap back to the old alternator so I will do that (could have buggered it if running with no load du...

do you have 12 volts at the alternator main terminal with the engine switched off? Yes there is 12v on the sense line with the engine off but igniton on. What I did confirm is that there is no continuity from the start solenoid brown +ve wire to the outpput terminal on the alt. I only get continuit...

Alternator charging problem

Hello, my car seems to have developed a problem with charging the battery, the red ign warning light stays lit after engine start. I thought it was a duff alt so fitted a new one but it's the same. I'm getting the excitation voltage to the small terminal through the ign switch/red light. However I o...
