Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Still overflowing. Gasket set ordered, what should I be looking out for when we take the head off? Also, is there a specific order for replacing / tightening bolts afterwards?

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'd thought about there being an air lock. I'd filled her up with hot water to speed things up and it just kept flowing out once the engine got up to temperature - over a litre came out and showed no sign of stopping! It is only happening when the engine heats up, not imme...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Topped up the radiator just now and started her up, ran for 15 mins but as soon as the engine got warm the radiator overflowed again - a steady stream of water flowing out. I'm going to order a new gasket set, the good news is that I've checked the dipstick and filler cap and there's no sign of any ...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Normally on starting after a 'refill' there would be some bubbling as air came to the surface and was replaced by water. I didn't know that, I'll top up the radiator and see if it continues as a first step. Was the past 'overheating' repaired by fitting a new head gasket? You can't just expect a pr...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

The over flow seemed quite substantial - on closer inspection it's gone from full to 3" down. Every time the engine was re-started and run for a few mins the fluid kept running out of the overflow pipe. By gasket blowing do you mean the cylinder head? There were overheating problems before the ...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

She's running!!!! :D Engine seems to be sputtering a bit but not badly and I'm assuming that it may be because of the old fuel still in the system? The radiator also went a bit mad and overflowed everywhere, but this could just be due to being too full - going to wait until it's cooled down and chec...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Still nothing to report on the starting front. I've been at *small voice* Bug Jam this weekend and being surrounded by beautiful classic VWs made me hanker for the Traveller being on the road more than ever! Off to the garage I go... Battery on charge (just in case), going to check that the spark fr...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Just a quick update - still no joy but haven't had much time to give everything a proper look over. Hopefully the coming bank holiday weekend will yield some results.

re: HT leads - the set I removed were carbon core, so I replaced like for like. I'll check the seating again and the order later this morning.

All the new bits I've got have come from ESM and I did double check that they're the right ones.

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Oh dear, JowettJavelin, hope you get yours sorted soon! :)

bmcecosse - the cap is brand new, as is the rotor arm - should I get another of each just in case?

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

I'm only asking further questions to clarify what I'm being advised to do, I understood the coil test instructions from yesterday/ this morning but hadn't had the chance to try until a couple of hours ago... There is a spark from the coil lead but still nothing at the plugs. I've checked the connect...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

OK, I'll give that a go later today... Just to clarify, how do I flick the points? By hand or using pliers? Apologies for my ignorance!

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

I don't have a spare coil but I guess ordering one is the next logical step... It just seems odd that there was power from it earlier in the week but not now.

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Still nothing :( We have: - replaced dizzy cap, rotor arm, HT leads and plugs. Cleaned the distributor. - Checked for power to the coil - it's there. - Checked for power at the plugs - nothing. There was power to no.2 earlier this week. - Messed about swapping new and old bits, just in case. Still n...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

The rotor arm and inside of the cap are minging and it looks like conductive carbon dust from the centre pin. Give it all a good clean out and see why it's being ground down in that way. +1. Also looks like the distributor bob weights and cam haven't seen an oilcan for years. Nowt wrong with those ...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

I replaced the rotor arm yesterday so that's now shiny and new, I cleaned the inside of the cap the other day but will give it another go later on. Other than that, what next?

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Well, the bits I ordered arrived and there is now a new set of leads, rotor arm and plugs in place - got sent the wrong dizzy cap so that needs to be exchanged - I ordered a side entry one and was sent a top entry instead :-? Anyway, still nothing happening :( Fuel pump is ticking away merrily and s...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

The plugs aren't old - I replaced them two years ago and the car has been laid up for a year. The state of them makes me worry about the engine... I didn't replace the dizzy cap or leads previously on the basis of "it ain't broke so don't fix it". I've just ordered a new dizzy cap, leads, ...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

Why is everyone going on about the starter - I don't see any suggestion of a starter problem ?? Oddly enough I had what I thought was a fuel/ignition problem because engine was running really rough as soon as I tried to rev the engine up. Just as I was going to ask Bmcecosse for help we noticed the...

Re: Not starting - fuel pump issues?

I was given a questionnaire but never had a response to my comments.

What might the starter motor need doing to it?

There is a spark at the plugs, haven't investigated the points in the distributor yet - I'll try putting fuel into the carb first and report back later.
