This is how I did it take out tank and empty -take up to mother's with large garden -flush tank out with hose pipe 3 times -leave over night full of water empty tank in morning split the top of the offending nut with a nut splitter. Heat around the area with a blow torch (alot) - insert one of those...

The pipe has broken off with little resistance actually at the brass bit and the brass bit is well rounded off. It looks that I will have to buy another fuel tank at £100 which is very annoying as there doesn't seem anything else wrong with the tank.

The pipe is cut! - I think I'll ahve to take the tee union (cross thing) off and take it from there - I've soaked it in oil and all that - it's coming off one way or another just for satisfaction even if I have to replace the parts!

Taken the fuel tank off and seems to be a brass neck where fuel pipe enters the fuel tank Am I right in thinking this screws out and off ?? becasue I'm sure I have seen replacements for this brass looking bit advertsied. The brake union at rear of car (cross like) before it divides off into the indiv break pipes to cylinders. Got a series III LR and MM - contrast each other well -both fun to drive in different ways - make you feel different about yourself when driving either/ or around for some reason

I need to weld / strengthen the driver's side area where the rear shackle plates support the leaf springs I'm a bit concerned that this is a bit near the fuel tank though obviuosly not up against it Would I be advised to remove the fule tank 1st (using a MIG welder) Plus what thickness would you adv...

you suggested the axle was rotating as the mountig plates had rusted - what do i do now

(I've got both Haynes nad the original manual)

I've read all these replies and I think it sounds like the mounting plates on the axle have rusted away letting the axle rotate and now the diff is not level but pointing up, raising the prop nearer the tunnel .
