Coils

Hi Coils were never a problem on the original Minors, apart that is from general basic faults. It is only when modifying the ignition system that faults occur. ie; Changing polarity, great, provided you change every other affected item. The coil then becomes incorrect and the polarity wrong. ( The S...

Heater Intake

Hi
I think any alteration to Heater intake other than "Fresh Air" could be extremely dangerous. An engine gives off many fumes that are TOXIC.
Please keep it in a Fresh air situation.

Blowing hot/cold

Hi Mike I have sent"E" re.Valve. I suspect your system has an Air Lock. If it worked before but not after disconnection this is most likely. They just undo valve leaving cable on, so providing its not maladjusted should be fine. Cure------ Drain Engine and radiator (below level of heater t...

Excessive Minor "Noise"

Hi Mostly caused by an air leak on Manifold. Great write-up on exhaust. There is a previous comment on "Twin exhausts". I have found that if the Ignition contacts are Too close, gap small, this will cause the unburnt fuel to ignite at the wrong time in the exhaust. If possible the more acc...

Valve Clearances

Hi Please don`t say "tappets" As I have pointed out previously, Tappets are really "Cam Followers" "Adjusting Tappets" comes from the Side Valve engines, when that is what was done to adjust valve clearances. A decent mechanic will always use the correct term. On OHV en...

Miss-fire

Hi It would take pages to cover all causes. But here are two that people often overlook . The very hot weather does highlight one fault with the minor. has the engine an exhaust sheild fitted on the carb. flange? During hot weather and therefor hotter than normal running temperture, the fuel tends t...

Unions/p/pumps

Hi
Have you tried a m/cycle shop for the union? Most British classics had Union fittings.
Note; When fitting rear P/Pump make sure you have a "Pusher" type ,not a "Puller", ie; Standard Minor are "Pullers".It was usual to use a heavy duty one..............Ivor...........

Brake balance

Hi My last effort you will be pleased to hear.(Bought 3 special Mini`s). I suggest all things are checked on EACH front wheel. Tyres, air pressures, type, suspension, drums, shoes, I also suspect the ONE new cyl. is more effecient than others. When bleeding brakes make sure in right sequence.(All brakes ...

Hi Firstly bring the water temp. up to normal. (Make sure termostat is open by checking heater hose for temp.) WITH heater valve open. Allow to cool slightly till safe to remove rad. cap CAREFULLY. Then do pressure test. A garage will normally carry out test quite cheaply. Run engine during test bri...

Hi Just a note; When fitting "Duplex" timing chain/wheels. you have to change the two lowest bolts to C/Sink, (fowls the timing wheel). To align the sprockets, use a steel ruler or straight edge across the sprockets. Adjust on the crank sprocket by shimming. (carefully remove key to fit sh...

Hi This is a common problem and here are just a few I have found; 1st. If the Polarity has been changed on battery(Pos. to Neg.) then the coil connection should also be changed ie; CB.points are on the Earth side. Better still change to a modern coil, suitable for a 12v Neg earth system. 2nd The coi...

Hi The Carbs have been explained. Exhaust; It is based on the exhaust pipe length from valve head to first Silencer or Junction where they join up. The "A" series is governed by a "siamised" port. This makes for poor Exit. So the only way to improve is to have a Long centre syste...

HI I suppose the answers YES. But I have only seen one S/H and that was £500? They used to be quite common and "Shorrock" made several types. They are relatively easy to fit. The main problem on the Minor was the oil supply to the Charger bearings. It has become unpopular now I think becau...
