Re: Steering rack oiling/greasing
An oil/grease mix is called 'groil' in Austin Seven circles. We used to pump it into the steering box, if you over did it it came up the column and dropped into your lap. Nice. We used a mixture in the hope that it wouldn't leak out of the steering box too quickly. It was explained to me that oil an...

Re: Spanner size expert needed
Ah Ha! It all falls in to place. Many years ago I had a Railton which in effect was a Hudson with British bodywork and a few tweaks. Its electrical equipment including ignition was Delco Remy (from memory). These probably came in the boxes of junk (think treasures) I got with the car.
Thanks all.
Thanks all.

Re: Spanner size expert needed
I was simply bemused by sizes like 7/32 and 15/64 which seemed specific to something but if not I'll just put them back in the box for another 20 years.

Spanner size expert needed
spanners1.jpg These little things have followed me around for years. They are tiny and much smaller than the picture. Some of them are marked with an 'E' number, for example E67, E66, E65 etc. Some of the sizes are, well, somewhat unusual, for example 13/64, 15/64, 11/32, 7/32, 9/32. They were made...

Re: old timer special?
I used to find my self explaining how the cooling system on my Fiat 600 worked. Contrary to popular belief the fan sucked air in through the louvres on the engine lid, blew it through the radiator and from there it exited via a thermostatically controlled flap under the car. Worked very well, just a...

Re: Battery vents
So...in theory...they are not sealed in use, they have a valve. (I can be pedantic!) If they are supplied by a garage or factors then these transit bungs ought to have been removed by them. If they are sent by courier etc the bungs may still be there? Of course, some of will be using 'sealed' batter...

Battery vents
Do 'modern' car batteries have vents? Presumably they still produce gas when being charged? Or are they 100% sealed? Or do they have 'plugs' in a vent that should or should not be removed? Or do they have some sort of valve? They are described as 100% maintenance free. This came up in conversation I...

I have one, it is a hub puller/extractor for an Austin 7. You can still get them new if you want another!

After a lifetime of ruining bleed screws and brake pipes I bought a brake pipe spanner.

Re: Rebuilt steering rack
Rack from ESM arrived promptly. Garage man took two and half hours including tracking, checking and greasing trunnions etc. All straightforward except one mounting bolt had fused itself to a rack support and needed significant persuasion. Also wrapping up the old rack for return turned into somethin...

Convertible hood
I call our a convertible because it is a conversion... At the back of the rear window there are two fastenings, one inside and one outside. On our hood the inside one is a popper and the outside is fixed with a screw. Is one supposed to undo both before lowering the hood in which case should they bo...

Re: 1000 wheel question re: breakage
I've heard it told that someone once drilled an extra three holes in the wheels so the brakes could be adjusted without wheel removal whatever way the wheel was fitted. Apparently a wheel cracked and then came apart. I don't know if the OP's wheel have the additional hole for brake adjustment, if no...

Re: rattling noise when nearside front wheel goes over pot holes
Ours rattled or clattered at the slightest opportunity. Horrible noise.
I know nothing but we have just replaced the steering rack and although the car is not eerily silent the clatter/rattle has gone.
Surely this is not a coincidence...

Rebuilt steering rack
I plan to buy a rebuilt exchange steering rack from ESM.
Would you recommend ESM or is there someone you'd recommend instead?
Prices seem similar across all the suppliers, I have no idea about quality.

You are right, having checked the damper bolts I've decided to take the car to the garage, they are happy to diagnose and quote.

Re: Front end rattle
Being deaf in one ear doesn't help either! I think there are three potential culprits: The damper bolts The rack or rack damper The torsion bar etc. Plan of action 1 Stuff the rack full of grease. I know this is 'not correct' but if it shuts it up for a few miles the culprit has been identified. 2 C...
