Re: Fitting indicator stem bulb difficulty.
SUCCESS! I did as you suggested and managed to screw the bulb in another millimetre or so and it worked. Not an easy job as 3 hands would have made it so, but just enough to do the trick. I am much obliged to you.

Re: Fitting indicator stem bulb difficulty.
Yes, it is a very tightly wound spring. The old bulb did break when I removed it but the base came out OK. The bulb lengths all look to be the same so I cannot see why the new bulbs will not go in as far. I tested the circuit and when the spring is connected to the centre contact with a tester, the ...

Re: Fitting indicator stem bulb difficulty.
LED , the very word rings bells...is the polarity correct? Have you tested them across a 12v supply? On mine ( 1958 ) the current flows both ways so a LED would only work for one direction , if at all... John ;-) Yes, I have tested them and they work. I made sure I ordered the correct polarity. The...

Fitting indicator stem bulb difficulty.
I have been trying to fit a new bulb to my indicator stem (the green one that flashes) but cannot get it to work as the end of the bulb does not seem to go in far enough to reach the terminal at the bottom. The old bulb that went worked fine. I have screwed it in as far as possible but still no joy....

Re: Fitting an aluminium GB plate to car
Thanks for the tip. In the end I decided the small Meccano strips were too flimsy and got two 'perforated strips' from my local car shop and cut and bent them to fit. All bolted up nice and tightly after adjusting to the right position. I agree the 'UK' sticker just does not look right, but I have a...

Fitting an aluminium GB plate to car
I am about to fit an aluminium GB plate to my car (yes, I know about the change to UK and have a magnetic UK one as well) and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for fitting it. I have a few strips of metal with holes from a Meccano set which I intend to use as brackets to fasten to the rear bump...

HIF6 carburettor - a tale of smoke and mirrors
I have just completed fitting an HIF6 carb to my 1300 midget engine, replacing the single HS4 that was there previously which seemed to have run out of puff. Having carefully stripped and rebuilt the HIF6 with new gaskets, needle and butterfly valves, new K&N filter and got all the cables finall...

Re: HIF fuel pipe conundrum
The standard pipe fittings on the fuel pump outlet are held by jubilee/hose clips so I would be surprised if they were not safe if properly fitted. I have used jubilee/hose clips for over 40 years without any problems. High speed use/racing may require something else. What alternatives would you sug...

HIF fuel pipe conundrum
I am in the process of fitting an HIF carburettor but have a conundrum with the fuel inlet pipe. It has a captive securing nut which was presumably originally to fit a mating fuel pipe to - see photo. I have no idea what car it originally came off. I had intended to try and cut the nut off so that I...

Re: Butterfly disc seating
Upon further investigation, I realised I had not slackened off the choke and idle adjusting screws, so it would not close fully. Having done so, the gap is now almost imperceptible. Silly me! Over 40 years playing with Morris Minors and I still have lots to learn!

Butterfly disc seating
I have just been rebuilding an SU HIF6 carburettor and fitted a new butterfly disc. Having fitted it and tightened the screws, I notice that the disc does not seat fully against the carb body (see photo) as there is a small amount of light showing through the gap. Is this acceptable? I know that the...

Re: Smiths battery gauge
Well, I finally got round to attending to this and cleaned up the end of the wire and scraped the old enamel off the post and used the wire glue to stick the wire back on the post and applied a small drop of Superglue afterwards to make sure. The trickiest part was getting it all back together in th...

Re: what seats fit
I fitted a pair of MG Midget seats that were recovered to match the rear leather. The advantage of these seats is that they have headrests, the backs tilt and they slide to adjust. They are also similar to the originals in style and do not look too modern. The seat bases came from JLH Morris Minors....

Re: Converting positive earth clock to negative earth
Brilliant! That is just what I needed to know. Thanks for your help.
So just to confirm, the red wire connects to the lighting circuit, the yellow to earth and the 'earth' connector to a live feed?

Converting positive earth clock to negative earth
In my garage clearout, I came across a new old stock Smiths 12v transistor clock (CTE 3103/00) - see photos. The reason I never fitted it was because it is positive earth, whereas my car is negative earth. Is there any way it can be easily adapted to work with a negative earth circuit? I thought of ...

Lucas relays
I am considering fitting a second Lucas Windtone horn to my 1960 car (negative earth with alternator) and reading various posts here, a relay is a sensible addition. There are a plethora of them available, mostly little black plastic boxes, and while making the horns work safely is the main goal, I ...
