In the end I reconned the original head.

Engine heads
Can I put a known good 1098 head on a 948 engine without modification, in other words is it a straight swap?
Thank you

Re: interchangeable engines?
Thanks - but to be fair it was an unleaded head, perhaps 15000 miles ago.
From a well know internet seller and own website.
Also had valve springs break on this head.
Not sure about the quality of this restoration on the head.
Lucky I had a spare valve.
It's soooo much better.

Re: interchangeable engines?
Well, I don't think I need to change the engine. After lots of faffing, I decided to whip the head off today. I found that only 3/4 of one of the exhaust valves was present. No wonders it's been feeling a little lack lustre. How common is it that valves disintegrate? Where on earth did the bit go? I...

Re: interchangeable engines?
I can "easily" change a 1098 gearbox and engine for the 948.
Is the drive shaft the same?

interchangeable engines?
My 1958 948cc saloon's engine is on it's last legs, methinks. I have a good 1098 engine (and gearbox) rebuilt 5000 miles ago only. Can these engines be swapped over without modification to the mounts etc? Can I do just the engine or the gearbox as well. I even have a 1098 drive shaft if they are dif...

Re: Engine odd noise
And.... Heater valve wins!!
The base plate had lost it's thread.
I did think I knew what I was doing on a head, and it is torqued down correctly.
Thanks
Nick

Re: Engine odd noise
Yes - I'll check everything now.
If I've done more damage than is reasonably repairable, I have a spare 1098 (good) engine. Is it a straight swap?

Re: Engine odd noise
Well I did think that, so will check properly when I get back after a few days. But, I'm fairly sure I can see water coming out between the block and the head. It stays in until I take the radiator cap off.

Oh dear - I got that wrong. Water out of the back of the engine between head and block.

Re: Engine odd noise
Ta thanks. The head has been skimmed 7000 miles ago. It was fully reconditioned.
It was more likely I hadn't torqued it properly as some bolts were not at all tight.
Thanks
Nick

Re: Engine odd noise
Yup - blown between 3 and 4. Replaced head gasket.
No apparent damage or cause.
Some head bolts were not so tight at that end.
Thanks for the direction and help

Re: Engine odd noise
Yes that makes sense.
I had a similar noise on a A40 once.
Would the noise not really be apparent on idle?
I can whip the head off no problem. done that before

Engine odd noise
Have noticed a very odd new noise. Imagine a really loud pinking type noise upon acceleration. It is hard (ish) to start and sluggish. Only about 70% of power. Tried disconnecting spark plug to see what cylinder it might be. 3 and 4 make little or no difference to overall power. Valves are good. Hea...

Carburettor problem
I recently have been experiencing carburettor problems. Engine dead - turns over, not firing. Replaces points and condenser several times, new cap, leads. Was getting a spark, but nothing firing. Turned out to be the large "plunger" you can see when you take the air filter assembly off. It...

Re: Blowing fuses
The chaffing earth comment set me on a path and I've believe I've solved it.... I managed to find a fuse that wasn't blowing. Periodically, when I was using the indicator, the fuel gauge went dead. It happened in both directions, so not and individual left or right circuit, but the flasher unit shor...

Re: Blowing fuses
Completely blown - the flat wire clearly melted through. - Seems to be on starting- if I replace it while the engine is running - all ok. Can turn on and off several times ok.
Next morning - blown

Re: Blowing fuses
I wasn't- 10A replacement. Now I have 45A and it blows those. I can run it, put the fuse in - all great. Turn it off, come back tomorrow, turn it on - blown. Can it blow without ignition on? Could it be the switch upon starting? Yes when I've just put a new one in and start if 5-10 times, no problem...
