Re: Gearbox woes
I would have thought that if it was bearing trouble, the 'box would be noisy, the chap said it wasn't, that's why I didn't include the first motion shaft bearing to my list of possible faults.

Re: Intermittent mis-fire
Do you get this intermittent mis - fire when the engine is cold, or is it only after you've driven a few miles? If the engine mis fires then cuts out after a few miles, then you let the engine cool down, try it again and it's ok again for a while, it's usually a faulty coil.

Re: Gearbox woes
Worn teeth on syncro hub, weak syncro hub springs, worn dog teeth on the fourth ( first motion shaft ) gear wheel, worn baulk ring, worn detent in selector rod, worn fork or displaced selector rod bearing or broken selector rod bearing spring. Could be any, some or one of the mentioned!

Or could be a jet that needs centralising. If it's off centre, it will be stiff and so more difficult to return.

Re: Ribcase gearbox behind a 948
I did this conversion myself using a 1098cc back plate, you can't use the 948cc back plate because it is recessed, a 1098cc fly wheel and a 1098cc clutch kit. Worked really well, not so revvy. You'll have to change down a tad earlier on hills than you would have done with the 948cc box though becaus...

Re: oil leaking between rear of sump and bellhousing
Are your big end and main bearings in good shape? Wear in this department can cause the crankshaft to run on the oil thrower cover causing wear, ( arrowed in picture ) thus allowing oil to run past, it should be smooth on the inner side. It is held on by 3 x 1/4 bolts. You will have to remove this t...

Re: Number plate.
Definitely a DVLA re-registration sometime in its life. Thought as much, but it's still a mystery to me that being a '63 car that it didn't have an "A" plate for its re reg, which would be age related to the car seeing as they started the scheme in '63. I have seen other cars registered i...

Re: Number plate.
Three letter *SK numbers were issued by DVLA as replacement numbers, as the original issued numbers barely reached ASK ** by 1963! It took them 60 years from December 1903 until 1963 to use the SK1 -9999 batch! So the SK batch was issued by Caithness originally, not Edinburgh, but anything after ea...

Re: Number plate.
No, I didn't plan to sell the plate after possibly buying the car, but I wanted a car that had it's original number plate, that's why I tried to get to the bottom of the mystery. The number plate contained "SK" which was widely used in registrations that had been issued as an age related p...

Re: Number plate.
Yes Alan, I thought it strange, usually though, if you sell off a number plate, you get an age related plate, so I would have thought that if this car had its original number sold off, being a '63 model, it would have had an "A" plate. I think the vendor got fed up with me grilling him abo...

Number plate.
There's a 1000 saloon for sale that I'm interested in having a look at, with the possibility of buying. It's a November 1963 registered car with a six digit number plate rather than an "A" plate. I know not all regions adapted the lettering system in 1963. The vendor claims that the number...

M.M.O.C. Holland
I've seen a picture of a Sage Green '58 Minor convertible on a page from the Minor club in Holland and I believe it was the car I owned and sold back in 2001. Difficult to tell because of the Dutch number plate, but there are certain oddities on the car that only myself would know about, so I'm sure...
