Re: Oil (not) Pressure
I have three english classics so you are quite correct, that I should keep better records so as not to confuse myself from one to the other. This episode is a warning shot, if ever there was one. My test drive just now was super. i have mentioned in the forum before and noted low oil pressure genera...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
Very naughty! Especially as changing a spin-on is so easy!

Getting it off can sometimes be a problem. But yes, very remiss of me. I really cannot remember why it never got changed. Probably due to spares.

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
The fact the old filter was full of very black oil suggests it was doing its job very well. Perhaps the filter then became blocked allowing oil to bypass the filter. Presumably the spin on filter has some kind of bypass? The original Purolator does. So the oil pressure would rise too high due to th...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
I would be grateful for an explanation....... The replacement Mann oil filter arrived at the weekend and I have just taken the old one off ( spin on type) . Even though the oil as shown on the dipstick is relatively clear, the old oil filter oil was black, very black. I screwed the new one in and st...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
I thought I had a spare oil filter in my store but no. It is my last resort/attempt before having to remove the engine from the car to examine it. Have ordered a new filter locally but am not expecting any miracles once I change it. Even if the the pressure is restored, which I am doubtful of, the e...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
Thankyou Phil for spending the time to give me such a detailed answer. I did do a partial rebuild on my Triumph Herald engine 3 or 4 years ago, although essentially it was just replacing the crankshaft. I do still have the engine crane and engine stand from then. Always my concern however, when look...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
some further thoughts. 1. Is it possible after a 6 month lay off, that the oil pump needs repriming? I suppose I can do this for what it is worth. 2. When the car went into its annual winter hibernation, the oil pressure was not optimal but acceptable. i.e 35 - 40 psi @ 70 -80 kmh. Can it be that qu...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
Not good news for me. I took out the oil pressure relief valve and cleaned it up. There was no evidence as far as I could see of any scoring, only a shiny section on the plunger where it had obviously been rubbing against the housing. Putting it all back was a challenge as there is hardly any room t...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
Oh dear, Before removing the oil pressure relief valve to have a look inside, I went for a short drive . The oil pressure warning light extinguishes itself quite normally very quickly upon starting the engine. The gauge measured about 20psi and despite reving the engine up a bit, did not climb any h...

Re: Oil (not) Pressure
A"search" brought me to this topic which i would like to latch onto. My 1098 1969 Traveller gets summer usage and hibernates during the winter months - it gets quite cold sometimes here in the hills at 600m up. Anyway, I did have some trouble starting it a week or so ago - it just would no...

Re: Regulator replacement
I have had a lot of problems previously with the RB 106 regulator and its "new" replacement after market copies. In the end I got a digital modern one which externally looks exactly the same and its is fantastic! Whereas before, the ammeter always showed a discharge with the headlights on,...

Re: Engine seizure - in the garage?
I made a continuity test this morning which failed. This was encouraging as it pointed to a solution. I then removed the bolts holding the solenoid, cleaned then up as well as the area in the bulkhead they screwed into. Replacing the solenoid and then the continuity test repeated. It passed Reconnec...

Re: Engine seizure - in the garage?
New update , new problem but getting there. I have a replacement starter that works and installed it yesterday - it was just too cold to be working in an unheated barn recently. Anyway turned the key and nothing happened. then shorted the solenoid using a screwdriver and the starter whired into acti...

Re: Engine rattle
Again no expert hier. But I had a very annoying rattle/clonk that was very difficult to locate. It turned out to be the engine steady bar. If the engine head had been removed then so would have the steady bar. The rubber bushes/washers do not always sit properly afterwards. Easily checked by just re...

Re: Engine seizure - in the garage?
Update. I have removed the starter from the car and tried testing it on the bench. Using the HD cable removed from the solenoid, a 12v car battery, I rested the flanged end of the starter on the negative terminal and touched the pos with the cable. After a few attempts it did briefly run, i.e. 1 to ...

Re: Engine seizure - in the garage?
I think this is the only way but will have to wait until after the merry xmas days. I am not really in a big hurry as the car is in winter hibernation. We have a few cm of snow lying around and it is a bit chilly. When working on the car I bring a hot water bottle with me to warm the hands inbetween.

Re: Engine seizure - in the garage?
If I used a HD starter cable between the engine and the neg earth battery terminal and the starter still did not energise when asked to, then this would prove that it is the starter - question mark?
