The current gearbox was bought - reconditioned - a year ago from a reputable Morris supply place, but has made the noise since the start, I think. Does this mean I was sold a lemon?

Washing the undercarriage in preparation for waxoyl

How does one go about washing, cleaning or otherwise prepping the undercarriage before spraying a new coat of Waxoyl?

Do you need a power sprayer? Wire brushes? A toothbrush and bucket of water?

Thanks.

Driving with the handbrake on

A hypothetical question. Supposing someone were daft enough to go for a drive and then discover, much to his (or, hypothetically, her) shock and horror, that he had driven 20 miles with the handbrake on, what damage might he have done to his poor little car? And, purely hypothetically of course, wha...

What’s making my gearbox whine? …reprise

Thanks for all the answers to my recent post about my whining gearbox. You were all absolutely right -- the whining noise when driving in first, second and third gears is indeed related to the gearbox rather than the engine. I was all excited about topping up the oil in the gearbox and having the no...

What is Hypoid oil?

My workshop manual says I need to use Hypoid oil in the rear axle. What is it, and by what name do I ask for it at the shop?

And what oil should I be using in my gearbox?

Thanks!

General maintenance? What needs to be done regularly?

I have a recently reconditioned Morris 1000 and want to keep it in top condition, but being new to this I'm at a bit of a loss. I have the workshop manual and so on, but have no idea what needs to be checked or done regularly to keep it so. Can anyone suggest a checklist of bits and pieces that need...

What's causing my engine whine?

My engine has a mechanical whine to it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, but not in 4th.

When idling, the whine disappears when depressing the clutch. (What a choice! A whiny engine or a depressed clutch.)

Any ideas what's causing this, and how can it be resolved?

Thanks.

What should I NOT waxoyl on the undercarriage?

Got myself some waxoyl for the undercarriage, but being new to this I want to make sure I do it right.

Is there anywhere I should NOT put waxoyl on? eg the muffler and exhaust? Suspension? Anything at all?

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the help. It's latching properly so I think I'll start by shimming the latch plate. Any ideas how this should be done? What kind of spacer could I use? And if I need to replace the worn latch peg, how can this be done? I looked at the whole lock mechanism the other day and couldn't figure...

touching up tiny cracks in the paintwork

Forgive me again if this has been talked about before (or better yet, tell me where to find it!), but I've noticed a few recent little cracks in the paintwork that are beginning to rust.

How should I deal with these?

Thanks as always,
Malcolm

drilling holes to drain water from the pan

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find the thread. When water leaks through the side and rear windows, it settles in the floor pan thing (what's it called? the thing with the series of holes along the top that supports the front edge of the rear seat). Drying it out is tough and I'...

door latch opens even when locked

Odd problem. My front door closes nicely and locks, but even when locked there is about 1 mm play in the movement of the latch when you pull the handle. Because the latch overlaps the little metal thingy on the doorframe by only about 1mm (how's that for bad luck?), the door pops open even if locked...

grinding, squealing reverse gear

Hi folks, I've just returned from Shetland and my wife has asked me to look into Oswald's gearing. While I was away she had a couple of occasions on which, when she tried to put the car into reverse, it wouldn't go into gear at all and gave her a horrific squealing screeching grinding noise instead....

Thanks to you all for the replies. My feedback isn't going to be too helpful, I'm afraid. The problem occurred the day before my departure to Shetland (where I'm sitting right now). Another friend suggested checking the carbeuretor for grit on the pin, which I did (there was; I cleaned it) but that ...

Engine cutting out - fuel line problem?

Ok, here comes a message from the almost supremely ignorant. I bought a '61 ('63? depends who you ask) saloon recently, reconditioned. Good engine, ran well for a few weeks but suddenly it's become temperamental. Once I get it started I can keep the engine running (usually) with my foot on the accel...

Back seat water blues

Hi Kevin, I bought it two or three weeks back. The guy I bought it from lost his license for drink driving and had to sell, but unfortunately his drink problem is so severe that some of his answers to my questions don't make sense, so I'm not sure exactly when it was done. Probably in the past four ...

Speak to me of Waxoyl

What a wealth of information. Just discovered this very problem in my own 2-door saloon yesterday and got concerned. The car had been completely restored but I still found litres of water sitting in that box under the rear seat. But speak to me of Waxoyl. What is it? Do you just clean and dry the (o...
