Re: Is this normal?

I went away camping in the moggy this weekend. A round trip of 220 miles I achieved ........ 17mpg at a steady 60mph!

As much as I love my tuned up engine I don't think my pockets are deep enough for that kind of mpg. Back on goes the hs2

Re: Is this normal?

Cool, I will definitely have a go at the airbox, I may try grafting the minor one back on. I know all about money pits. I don't even know why I'm tuning it, I should be saving for the full restoration that looms. The engine, gbox, brakes and suspension are sound but the rest of the car is falling ap...

Re: Is this normal?

More noise is not something I desire from the exhaust, the induction noise from the hs4 is already ridiculous. Are there any alternative air boxes that would quiet down the carb? I currently have a pancake filter. As for the exhaust maybe I will just re manufacture the original exhaust without the r...

Re: Is this normal?

Totally agree! The whole conversion cost £120, as a ratio of £ to bhp gain its unreal! My mind has been blown and my big ends will soon be following if I don't take it a little easier on the loud pedal :D I've got the bug for tuning now! are there any other such mods I haven't found yet that deliver...

Re: Is this normal?

Forget the cracked head  It was cracked all right, no doubt about it. Now its only purpose is an ash tray.

Packing a 1275 head and hs4 under the bonnet now. She's an animal!

Re: Differential for Disaster

I have managed a few quick checks this evening. I measured approximately 5mm difference between wheel centres but not the way I expected to find given the symptoms. The right side is longer, I imagine that would drive the rear end out to the right rather than left. This lead me back to the diff so I...

Re: Differential for Disaster

Sorry bmc I really don't mean to doubt you, your advice is always greatly appreciated. I was hoping for an insight into how were you still getting drive to a wheel. I thought the diff would send all the power to the side with least resistance which I would have thought to be the side of the broken h...

Re: Differential for Disaster

Surely if I had broken a half shaft all the power would go to the broken side rather than the good side?

Differential for Disaster

Hi all, I went away camping in the traveler two weekends ago, upon unloading all the weight i felt something very wrong with the handling. Upon investigation i found a flattened leaf spring of which i have replaced both this morning. Having now taken her for a test spin it seems it was only half the...

Re: Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

Wow, what a beast! Its a completely different engine. The bottom end and Idle is quite rough but it revvs so freely drifting on dry roads is now quite easy. I have bodged on a moggie air filter until the new one arrives, I hope this is the cause of the poor idle and such. Also my speedo stopped work...

Re: Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

I wish I could think of a better use ... door stop it is. I need a inlet manifold but all I can find are water heated ones. Will it run ok without heating? Alternatively it could be heated by the return from the heater which now needs to be re routed to clear the stat housing, two birds with one sto...

Re: Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

I was looking at my 1098 head today to find out what failed as the gasket was intact. Very shocked as I found quite a substantial crack between 3 and 4 ... ooops :( what happened?

I was kindly given a hs4 carb, still winning.

Re: Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

.322 for good measure :D I cant say its made much improvement in acceleration at the moment but im sure I am using less throttle for the same speed and seems to cruise easier at speed. Now looking forward to upgrading the exhaust and induction

Re: Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

Well in the end the easiest (very easy), fastest (5 mins) and cheapest (free) way to increase the valve clearance was to turn some metal from the flat face of the valves. Job done! My head has never been skimmed, after lapping and cleaning .010" was the most I had to remove. Some may call it ba...

Re: Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

Declan, I measured the clearance in much the same way as yourself except instead of a scrap of ally and a vernier I used a surface table and a dial indicator. I didn't realise the measurement is from the head face, I thought it was the minimum from the block with a gasket fitted ... oops. Knowing th...

Re: Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

I have got my eyes out for a cheap hif carb, I don't suppose I will find anything to add to the set up until beaulieu. I sat the head on the surface table and measured .295" of available lift with a dial indicator on the valve stem, the head gasket measures .048" before compression and not...

Jetting for 1275 head conversion.

Hi all, Mogs went out in a cloud of steam this weekend having blown the head gasket. On the very up side this provides me with the chance to fit my 1275 head. I will be running it with standard 1098 manifold, exhaust and hs2 for the time being. Can anyone running a similar setup suggest what needle ...

Re: faltering engine

Do you ever tire of being right? The jet needed centring. When centring should the piston still hit the bridge with the jet fully home? On mine the jet always lifted the piston 10thou even with the lock nut loosened. Is this to allow for more accurate centring or that the needle or jet are damaged? ...
