Re: Tapping noise coming from rocker gear

If you are sure it is coming from the back of the engine, then the possible causes are:- 1.Worn rocker shaft - easily checked by removing rocker gear. Replacement about £5 2. Worn rocker arm - same as above. 3. No.7 or 8 Cam follower. remove tappet chest cover, fish out and check. 4. No. 4 Piston - ...

Re: Torsion Bar Won't Budge

Make a note of which hole the torsion bar is located in the the vernier plate on the cross member. Take the whole thing off by removing the large securing bolt on the end of the torsion bar at the back, and the smaller nut and bolt securing the rear arm through the vernier plate. No need to disturb ...

Re: HELP i need some one ...Help...its hurting my head

Does the choke work? Is there a needle in the carb If you have fuel, compression and a good spark at the plugs, it must be a timing or mixture issue. Get number one cylinder to TDC and then check to see where the rotor cap is pointing. If it is not pointing to number one plug lead, then either rotat...

Hope I am not hijacking thread - I have just removed my 1098 following a cylinder head gasket fail. The engine was burning oil as well so I figured time for a block overhaul. my standard cam has some fatigue fractures on two lobes, so I want to replace it - I understand the MG metro cam is good - do...

Ignition switch wires

Can anybody advise: I had a mystery ignition problem which involved changing battery, solenoid and ignition switch, all of which were duff!!! It is a '71 pickup, with dash mounted ignition switch, secured with a locking ring. Like a fool I forgot to label the contacts on the ignition switch, so i ha...

Myminor, I fitted a 3.9 diff to my 1098 earlier this year - the most noticeable effect is the loss of acceleration and the need to change down a little more often. Conversation does prove a little easier tho' The other effect is that of speedo readout -the speedo measures at the gearbox and assumes ...

Picky Valves would strike block if mismatched heads used( this is where pocketing the block would be required) - from your discription this is not a problem as the 295 head is compatible. Valves could in theory strike pistons if lift ratio is changed excessively and lots skimmed off the head - I hav...

Valves hitting pistons - I am not talking about valves hitting block due to overlap - I think we have already established that one. What about inlet and exhaust strokes when valves are fully open and piston approaches TDC?? I may be missing something, but you must be sure that the valve is not opene...

I had a similar problem once - went through everything, but could not get to the bottom of it - I called the RAC out and the patrolman tested the coil and found it to be breaking down. It was certainly getting very hot. Changed coil, no probs thereafter.

Picky, There is a danger of valves hitting the block if you change rocker ratios and skim lots off of the head. Lift cannot be more than the depth of the chamber. Your engineer will be able to tell you how much the head has or has not been skimmed by measuring the residual height on one of the exter...

I agree with Turbo minor - 12G295 is a small bore head and will go onto the small bore block. (as with cooper S, MG1100 and front wheel drive cars that these heads came off of). If your concern is of valve diameter ( 12G295 has substantially enlarged inlet valves) -I am using a head with exactly sam...

Job done!! Bolted a bar with holes corresponding to stud centres onto hub, several taps with a lump hammer later and hub came cleanly away. Hardest part was removing the old oil seal - resorted to a blowlamp eventually. Whole job took less than one hour. Back of car is now substantially quieter. Tha...

Have ordered kit from DSN - £11.00 for bearing, gasket, washer and new oil seal. Did not get as far as pulling hub off, as it was getting dark and cold. Job see...

Rear Hub Removal

I need to replace the rear outer bearing, which requires hub removal. Does any one have any advice on how much force is required?? I have drilled a couple of holes in an old leaf spring, such that it fits onto the wheel studs. Will the hub come away with a few taps with a hammer, or does it require ...

Just joined this thread - reading about 12G295 cylinder heads. I have just fitted a 12G206 head to a std 1098 block. The 206 head is very rare, but exactly the same spec as the 295 (only difference is raised locating rings for inlet/ex manifold) These heads are from either Cooper S/ MG1100/ or MG mi...

H4 SU Carb - needle advice

Looking for some advice on needle selection. Have done basic mods to 1098 engine as follows:- 12G206 head (same spec as 12G295) - probably from a cooper S Skimmed down to 24 CC combustion chambers ( and unleaded seats) Std moggie exhaust manifold. Polished Frogeye inlet manifold straight through exh...
