I did have it mounted in the car, but to honest it is a gimmick as far as fuel economy is concerned. You know when you have your foot flat on the floor, you don't need an instrument to tell you. But it can be very useful as a tuning aid hence its redeployment to the engine bay.

Yes, should be a bargain for someone. I have hung on to it but in reality I will never need it again.

Yes, adjust distributor by ear for fastest/smoothest tickover, then advance or retard with vernier for highest tickover vacuum, finally road test to check for pinking.

Because I had it lying around, I fitted an old Redex Car Care Robot into the engine bay. I tried it out today after warming up the engine. I used to drive the works Vauxhall Viva van with a badly worn engine. The mechanics had drilled a hole in the bonnet and put the breather through. It was like driving a small train! Perhaps this is not a solution for you though.

You should be able to lock all wheels on a dry road.

What make is the replacement distributor? There are known to be some very poor copies available.

No, its UK. I did cut back as far as possible and soldered fresh flex however when I tested it the chassis/casing was live!! :o . That's why I wanted to remove the stator. I have a vintage desk fan I was hoping to rewire. It was working but when I got into it the insulation was completely shot. I have stripped it down but cant see any way to remove the stator from the case. there are no visible fixings. Does anyone have an idea how to proceed? Thanks

I would definitely swap out the electronic ignition module for points and see how things are. I can't see how the timing could have moved unless the distributor clamp was loose.

I was going to ask where it was mounted. I'm pretty sure my own coil failure some years ago was vibration induced, the engine in that case was in dire need of attention, so the extra vibrations would not have helped.
