fitting a cigarette lighter

Post by wibble_puppy »

i know some of you have done this in your minors - can anyone advise me on the best type, the best place to mount it, and how to wire it in to the loom?

I have an alternator and appropriate wiring loom

possibly going to fit an old radio and reverse and fog lights, otherwise no cabin mods

cheers for any advice :D

Any good motor spares place will have new units, scrap yards for old. Mail order try Auto Electric Supplies or Vehicle Wiring Products. Both do a slightly cheaper unit without a light or a far better quality unit with illumination - even if you don't use the bulb, the unit is better (at least I think it is). Also available is a plastic mounting bracket to allow fitting under the dash, but I made a simple metal one and put it under the glove box. Wiring wise, take a feed direct from the live terminal of the solenoid via a fuse and wire to the centre contact of the socket (+ve). If you want the light, then pick that up from the dash lights behind the speedo. The outer case of the socket has a terminals for connecting to earth. All simple, but it's personal taste as to the exact style of socket and location. Good luck.

PS as you have alternator, I've assumed -ve earth.

I'd double-check that your wiring is up to it. I think that the addition of a cigerette lighter socket to Hebe prior to her new wiring loom helped cause her wiring to melt... :O

Use a seperate fuse, and run seperate, properly rated cable to the socket! :)

Oh, and don't put it on the switch, which is what I did...

I stupidly took the supply from the ignition switch, which is probably why the whole thing went wrong.

The ignition switch (and the wiring to it) couldn't handle the extra current required. At least I think that's what happened.

Follow the advice of SIMMITC! Take the live feed for the lighter
through an additional in-line fuse from the STARTER SOLONOID
(the thickish BROWN wire). This will avoid overloading any of the
original wiring.

This reply won't be worth the pixels it is written with given my track record in the Alternator thread ( ) but for what it's worth...
I have additional feed for all the electrical items I have added to Joe; radio, rear demist, reversing light and electric screen wash. From the battery a new +ve feed supplies a fusebox (next to the original one) and from there to individual fuses to all the consumers.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
