Engine rebuild

Post by gucu »

Hi All
My 1098 was leaking oil, the head gasket has blown and the engine had a complete leak of power. I had some work done by a local garage but it wasn't brilliant. The engine still leaks! But the power is still appalling. Travelling up hill I tend to lose all speed and in some cases end up in first gear. I am considering a complete rebuild.
Rebore and New Pistons: To restore compression and stop the oil burning.
Crankshaft Regrind: To ensure the bottom end is silent and reliable.
Upgrade the Head: Fit a lead-free cylinder head with slightly larger valves.
Is there a recommended machine shop that would do this work please? One local to Cornwall would be amazing? I think I can I get the parts from ESM? Is there anything else someone would recommend please? I did consider a 1275 but they are hard to get and I would probably have to do a complete rebuild on that anyway!
Thanks
Rich

My standard 1098cc was very worn out having never had any major work at all. Compressions were still good on paper but it definitely was burning oil and the oil consumption was absurd. It leaked and burnt oil (total loss lubrication!). The faster I went, the more oil it used. It also used a lot more petrol than it should and found hills a real challenge. I found an engine rebuilder who was OK but I wouldn't make a recommendation for a number of reasons relating to insufficient care and detail. Anyway, I just shipped the engine to him on a pallet and that meant distance was not an issue.

You could try West Cornwall Engine Services, down in Nancegollan. They did some work on a cylinder head for me about 11 years ago and the car is still running fine...... 8)
