Electric water pumps

Anybody used an electric water pump on a 1275 engine conversion?

Yes - on my Minor with 1380cc engine (over-bored 1275cc Marina block) .
My Minor is fitted with a Davis Craig/EWP electronically & thermostatically controlled electric water pump with a capacity of 115 litres /min
It has never given me any problems.
The controller is a EWP item.

The Davis Craig water pump is attached to the radiator which is located under the boot floor.
As the water pump is tightly packed in the under boot space I unfortunately cannot post a photo of the installation.
The Davis Craig/EWP system is not cheap but is the best.

No, not ever tried, but seems like a good idea - they were not really even thought of, in my days of altering car engines. However, my water pump was slowed to 1/2 or 2/3 normal speed and there was no fan fitted, either.

That was on my Cortinas and Escort back in the ‘70s. Never had an overheating problem, probably because they were rarely driven slowly.🙂

The main reasons I fitted a electric water pump were:
Quicker warm up as the coolant is not circulated until it needs to be.
I gained at least 4 bhp.
As the radiator is at the rear of the car I need to have a remote pump fitted.

Notwithstanding and subsequent to the above I have now also fitted a normal large capacity water pump and thermostat as I need to push coolant to the back of the head which is returned back to the bottom hose via an intercooler, similar to a MG Metro. The electric pump did not push sufficient coolant to the back of the head even though it circulated it. Not having coolant pushed to the back of the head in sufficient volume created a hot spot which occasionally caused the engine to run on even after the ignition was switched off.
The intercooler should help the engine warm up quicker and keep the oil temp down which will help with localised hotspots.
There is an electric fan covering the rear mounted radiator if required.
