1098cc rear axle casing.

Post by philthehill »

Wanted
1098cc rear axle casing.
Must be straight, no wear at the bearing seats and good threads on the ends. Most importantly no rust around the axle to spring mounts.
Prefer if the axle casing is located in Hampshire as I can then collect.
PM me if you have a good axle for sale.
I would take a whole axle if the casing was good.

Hi, Are you still looking for a 1098 Rear Axle casing.? I have one which is in excellent condition with no rust and the saddles are sound. It does not have a diff and the threads on both sides are in good order. The only problem is that I am in Lancaster which is a bit of a travel from where you live. Jim

Update:-
I have managed to find a 948cc rear axle in good condition. Whilst I would have preferred a 1098cc axle with the level/filler plug in the rear of the banjo it does not really matter as the axle is going to be fitted with a 4.8 - 1 diff which has the level/filler plug in the diff casing.
Now to the cleaning and painting of the axle casing. :tu1:

I have been cleaning and examining the 948cc axle casing this afternoon. There is a bit of wasting under the saddle of the O/S bump stop. It is not serious and the casing is still useable but I would preferer that there were non so whilst I will carry on with the 948cc axle casing for the moment I will still be on the lookout for a very good 1098cc preferably sourced in Hampshire.

Just taken delivery of a very good 1098cc rear axle casing.
Many thanks to all who replied to my request for an axle casing. :D
Now I can get on with work of building up the axle with a 4.8 diff, special half-shafts, Wolseley 1500 rear brakes and the more positive location spacers between axle and springs.
The need to replace the axle casing was brought about by the O/S axle mounting lug chattering on the spring causing the casing mounting lughole to wear. All the parts had been NOS at the time of fitment and when dismantled did not appear to be worn but the spring locating plate which fits into the axle casing lug had been distorted/squashed in a fore and and aft plane. It appears that the thin spring locating late is not capable of coping with the power and full power standing starts. That is why I am going to adapt the pickup/van method of locating the axle on the spring and the parts will be close fitting to eliminate any movement between axle and spring.
The upstanding part of the plate below is now oval and was allowing the axle to move about 8mm in the fore and aft plane.

I hope to be able to salvage the old axle casing by using sized spacers in the re-rounded/machined mount hole.

I am still looking for a good rust free 1098cc rear axle casing.
Whilst the 'new' 1098cc rear axle casing is serviceable it is not as good as I was hoping for so back to the drawing board as they say.
