Dynamo/Starter Motor Identification (are these Minor parts?).

Post by Chief »

Back when my Mother bought her '62 Minor it came with a large amount of spare parts.

Some of these parts weren't from a Minor, others were specific to the series MM etc. so I wondered how I could identify these dynamos and starter motors to know if they're suitable, and also whether they are only for a 948cc or also for the 1098cc engines.

I have done my best to photograph any stamped letters I could find on them.

Thanks :)

I can't read the numbers but the starter motors look like Lucas M35 series, maybe Lucas M35G and yes the Morris 1000 used those (and later the M35J)

The dynamo also appears to be Lucas. The one used in the Morris 1000 is the C40 but I think (others will correct me) the earlier cars used the C39.

Just today I was swapping over dynamo and starter motor on my car. Here is a Lucas M35J stater motor and a Lucas C40 dynamo. The J type starter motor does not have the removable cover over the brush contacts that the G has.

It's a pity there's not in better focus, can't make out much of anything...
Starter for all Minor as far as I'm aware is a Lucas M35G, but the M35J is essentially the same Starter, just a change of end plate design as far as I'm aware. I think the J was standard in 1275cc engines such cars as MGs.

Dynamo went from C39PV to a C39PV/2 eventually C40-1.
Essentially the same design, just increasing better max Current output, 17, 19, and 22 Amp.
The C40 had a slightly higher 'Cut In' speed (rpm) than the C39.

It's also a pity they've attached upside down but I had to dash off shortly after posting so couldn't fix it :D

Thanks for all your help, I can confirm one starter is labelled M35G, the other is corroded on the area where the other had that stamp but does look identical.

As to the dynamos, one is labelled C40, the other has 40 listed on it, but the letter before is rusted away - it appears identical to the C40 one so I presume they're both C40. These dynamos both have 2 spade connectors.

The third dynamo is too rusted for me to work out what it says, however it only has screw connectors, no spades which I presume going by ESM's site photos makes it a C39 (presuming it isn't from another car).

Made a mistake in the top thread, put '62 not '63 so going by that I'm guessing the C39 isn't suitable - will have to check sometime on her car :)
