1970 gpo van/pickup.

Post by Mk1joe »

Hello,
I am contemplating selling my much loved Morris minor pickup. I have had it for about 9 years now and I've had a lot of enjoyment from it, but I haven't used it a lot recently and could really use the space...

It was originally a GPO van which operated in the Brighton area. It still retains some evidence of this such as the original metal door cards with original stickers and plaques on them, the original gpo tax disc holder and a lot of original yellow paint is still visible around the cab, bonnet and doors.

When I bought this it had been stripped and there was a lot missing. The only parts left were the main cab, doors, bonnet, chassis, rear axle and gearbox. All of these bits I believe to be original, and everything else I have added.

Most of the cab is in quite good condition with lots of original sheet metal. The sills have been replaced along with the cross member below the cab back and the kidney panels in front of the door hinges. None of the welding has been done to an expert restoration standard, but it is strong and seems to be holding up well.

The doors are both very rotten at the bottom and the tailgate is in very poor condition. The cab back is dented but very good condition with little rust. The wings are fibreglass. The bed sides are quite rough and are made from a cut down van body but the metal part of the floors were replaced with new. All the work on this was carried out about 5 years ago, so that's how old the replacement panels are. The chassis is very rough with lots of repair patches all over it and one new replacement leg at the front.

The engine is a standard 1098 from a saloon with an electronic ignition distributor, twin carbs and a cherry bomb exhaust. It always starts and pulls strong. I once drove this from Portsmouth to Aberystwyth and back in a day and it never missed a beat. It has never not started or broken down on me.

I have recently bought and fitted some good used tyres on weller wheels but will include the wolfrace wheels as well.

Overall this is a very rough example, but usable. It would be a great candidate for a full restoration to take it back to original GPO van spec, or a basis for a hot rod build, or do like I have done and use it as it is. it's a tricky one to price but I'm going to start asking for £4500. My friend recently bought a non-running pickup project and paid £5000, and that one needed a new chassis. Although this one runs, drives and can be driven away, it would too benifit from a new chassis, and his one was a lot more original.

Any questions please feel free to message me on here.
I live in Fareham/Hampshire, where viewings can be arranged if wished.
Alternatively, if anyone in the area could store this for me for free, I would much prefer that to selling it! :D
Thanks for reading.
Joe
