Marina engine/Ford gearbox

Post by Jeremy Oxton »

Greetings!

I am putting a Marina engine in my Traveller to replace the current 1100 engine. I know the frontplate has to be swapped, but if I retain the Marina flywheel, will there be a need to swap the backplate?

Not only the front plate has to be changed but also the rear engine plate.
The bell housing for the conversions is designed and configured to fit the Midget rear engine plate - not the Marina/Ital rear engine plate.
The Marina/Ital rear engine plate will place the starter motor in the wrong orientation for use in a Minor.
ESM can supply a modified rear engine plate to suit.
You will also need the modified flywheel which is also available from ESM. The Marina/Ital flywheel is too big to fit inside the conversion bellhousing.
All parts required to carry out the conversion are available from ESM.

Thank you, that was most informative. I take the starter will foul something if kept where it is in Marina? Modifying the Minor flywheel to fit Marina engine will be easy: just drill four extra holes.

The middle insert ensures that the flywheel is kept central to the crankshaft.

Oh, bother! Apparently the insert will be needed, too.

In the marina position the starter hits the chassis leg. (the marina flywheel is bigger and the starter sits lower)

Doesn't the flywheel locate on the recess in the rear face too?

The front stub of the insert fitted into the centre of the ESM 1098cc modified flywheel fits into the recess at the rear of the Marina crankshaft to ensure concentricity of the flywheel relative to the crankshaft.
