Start of rear repair first timer

Post by Maria1959morris »

So tonight decided to remove rear wing as I knew there was welding needed never welded before stripped the wing off nuts snapped of course the wing isn't too bad I reckon it is savable so that bit of luck started clean up bit but over the next couple of days I'm thinking of removing the petrol tank and getting it out the way so I can clean up the surrounding metal and cut away the rot I am.not sure whether it can be fixed by cutting repair patch or would I be best to order repair panel anyway here's few pics so far

Yes those look like the wheelarch flange repair panels :D

Take your time and tack weld the strips in place..then regularly trial fit the wing etc before fully welding and it will all be ok.. :D :D

Disconnect battery ( and Alternator if applicable ) before welding.
Take plenty of measurements before you start cutting out ,if you are doing patch repairs make a cardboard template and cut the metal sheet generously. You can always trim later. You must weld to clean and solid metal so spend time thinking beforehand , in what order.
If you hack everything away , in one go , you lose all reference points. Metal must be very clean , otherwise you'll end up with rubbish welds.
Keep all glass and Paintwork well protected. Weld and angle grinder sparks wreak havoc. Always a fire extinguisher to hand.
Do some practice on scrap metal first.Good luck Bob

I'll echo " the looking good " comment. You can be proud of your work , knowing the time and effort you put into the project.
There is immense satisfaction in DIY. You are now fully entitled to wear the official " silly grin " ( when asked by people who did
the bodywork for you ? ) when you respond " I did myself.
It's the gift that keeps on giving. Bob

Yes, well done for taking it on, the Morris Minor design lends itself to the DIY owner/restorer, the consequence being satisfaction and financial saving. My projects wouldn’t have happened if I had to pay someone.

Just a thought, The car looks Clarendon Grey. Do not be tempted to chuck out the rear wing piping, no matter how squashed or compressed it might be. It is no longer available and although only a total nerd (me) would notice, the other greys or even black, simply do not look as good. If anyone knows of a source of CG piping......
