Wheels and back axle

Post by recycledwood »

Hi all,
Firstly I am not mechanically minded, so if you can help, please explain it simple.
I have a 1960 Mogi, with a worn out engine and gearbox.
I have purchasd a low milage Marina (44,000 miles on clock).
The Marina body has been recycled.
I have the engine, gearbox, back axle and springs and a few more part like brakes etc which I thought may be useful.
The intention is to put the Marina engine and box in complete as one unit. I have been told that a bit of bashing and cutting may be needed to get them to fit, but my neighbour is a very good mechanic, welder etc.
My questions to you are.
Should I use the Marina back axle complete, ot stick to the old Mogi one.?
I would like to put a wider tyre/ wheel on. I want the Mogi to look a bit different.
Which wider/ bigger wheels would fit either the Marina or Mogi back axles ? Maybe they are both the same. You people out there are the experts. Any help would be great. I have already bought a copy of Owen Burtons book.

Thanks for reading this far.
Rowland in Llanelli, S Wales

No offence, but if you're not mechanically minded then you're taking on quite a project. It's been done before, but I think you'll be relying a lot on your neighbour!

If you fit the marina back axle then you'll need to remove the Minor handbrake lever and fit the one from the Marina. If you keep the standard Minor axle it might have a problem with both the power and the ratio, although a later axle from a 1098cc Minor (yours should be 948cc) might be OK - other will advise. From personal experience I'd argue in favour of the Minor axle over the Marina. I've always found that the Marina axle is weak in the bearing department.

I have full ital running gear on my traveller and it still has the minor handbrake. Anyway, The marina gearbox requires a lump to be cut out of the bell housing to make it fit. It isnt a great gearbox its noisy and doesnt realy give any advantage over the minor box (other than having a syncromesh first) I didnt do the conversion so i can only comment on what i have seen to have been done. If i can help with pictures or measurements etc i will take some for you.

If you change the back axle then you can't use Minor wheels - and Minors look terrible on the cr@ppy Marina wheels ! You don't say what engine was in the Marina - is it 1275 , 1800 or 1700 ?

The standard Minor axle should be able to handle the output of the standard 1275 engine.

The Marina gearbox is a pig and I would not use it. If I were you, I would fit the engine and use the Minor's gearbox and axle. Of course before you do that (for safety) get the brakes sorted!

I'd stick with the standard minor gearbox, shove the marina engine in - with modified backplate.

PyoorKate has just put an Ital engine in her Mog - 1275 via a standard back axle rocks:)

Of course, the big thing is exactly HOW bad the gearbox is on the mog.

The Marina one is known for being a bit horrid - and you're also going to have to play with the hydraulic clutch (didn't marinas have them?)

Yes they did, so you'll either have to play about with the linkage or convert to hydraulic via a kit.
